Still Walking

#1 Post by Ms Thrifty » Fri Feb 05, 2010 9:09 am

I saw this Japanese film yesterday but although I would recommend it to those who like this sort of film, I don't think it currently has a very wide release - for instance, so far as I know, it's only on at one cinema in London.

It's a slow-moving story about a family get-together, coloured by the usual past traumas and differences (accidental death of the favoured elder son; doctor father embittered by younger son's failure to step in and follow in his footsteps, etc), so nothing dramatic happens; instead, the pleasure is all in the observation and detail. So a bit like a Dogme film without the high drama, if that's possible.

I cannot wait to see this film. I love Ozu's films such as Tokyo Story.

I don't think its going to be for most of the people on this forum though. I can usually tell that I'm not going to like a film if it is praised here (Harry Brown, Precious), or that I will love a film if it is generally poorly received here (A Serious Man).

Yes, I gather it's very Ozu, but actually, I think a lot of FMUK members would enjoy it if only they had the chance to see it. If people are interested, they can always rent it in due course. And even in central London it ssems not to be getting the audience it deserves: Apollo put it in the smallest screen and I had the whole auditorium to myself.

Don't you find that the tastes of FMUK users are highly mainstream, to the point where they would not really like Still Walking though, because that is my impression?
