I'd say I'm cynical and not religious at all before or after seeing the movie. I hadn't read the book and wasn't completely bowled over by the film.....
But I'm really, really glad I saw it especially on the big screen. I'm sure there's many layers of meaning and themes in there, but if you want it does work purely as a visual feast. Some of the images and scenes are stunning. The performances are all good even if your heart strings only get tweaked and not wrenched and the animals are utterly convincing. I knew they were CGI, but 99% of the time just couldn't see the join.
Hope that helps.

Thank you, yogi - this does help as it sounds as though your view might be similar to mine. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to tell what was CGI, other than by guessing what couldn't possibly have been filmed for real, so I'm more inclined now to take a chance on this one. Though OH may remain a conscientious objector...

Visually this is absolutely stunning. The colours are vibrant and the CGI amazing. The 3D isn't necessary though, especially if the cinema can't even figure out how to make it work. The first few minutes were blurred at WIQ even with the glasses on and loads of people went out to tell them. They finally stopped the film, apologised and put it right, but they didn't start again from the beginning as promised so we lost a few minutes at the beginning and for that reason alone I need to watch this again undisturbed - also hoping the idiots surgically attached to their phones will stay home next time.
It's a weird story, especially when the twist comes at the end and you feel a bit cheated frankly. I don't care much for religion or spirituality - what embellishing a story has to do with believing in any kind of God is beyond me but hey. The actor playing Pi was nice to look at but didn't convey all the emotions in a way that made you really care. I got more emotional about Tom Hanks grieving for a lost baseball in Cast Away ("Wilsooon! I am sorry, Wilsoooon!") than about Pi killing a fish ("I am so sorry and so grateful to God for coming in the shape of a fish" - or whatever it was he said). The relationship between Pi and the tiger was interesting though and the colony of meerkats beyond cute.
As epic stories go, this just had something missing for me but it's oh so beautiful to look at.
7.5/10

Just wonder if all the pre-screening showings are in 3D? Has anybody seen the 2D version so far?

hmm, I came away and could not pinpoint what I felt, even though it was a feast for my eyes, but that's it, there is something missing!

Mind-explosion. Graphics 10/10, Experience 10/10. I'd watch it again. Funny though, the cinema forgot to hand out 3D glasses so they had to pause and restart the movie. Definitely recommend it to see it in 3D. I jumped at a few parts though.

saw this at Silverlink last sunday. they too were unprepared and had to walk back in, thankfully before it started and announce that it was in 3d. Not a bad film but nowhere near a 10 probably more of a 7. Good screenplay and story but the 3d didnt really add a lot. Why bother with it. This is why The Artist is a far superior film than this which is a 10 as its a version of cinema that is the best.
Didnt really finish the story either to say who his wife was, was she a random or the girl from his childhood?

I can appreciate that it is an ambitious piece of film-making and it does have points in its favour: appealing on the eye, use of vivid colours, stunning shots of nature and the ocean, decent use of 3D and impressive CGI work on the animals, but for me, it fell a bit flat. There was far too much exposition at the beginning, and the film felt way too long, and it never held my complete attention. I stayed to the end but probably would have turned it off if I had been watching it at home.
I thought the trailer was rather average and now having seen the final product, the trailer is better than the film. 6/10.
