George Benjamin: Dance Figures
Igor Stravinsky: Violin Concerto in D
Interval
Bela Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra

Esa-Pekka Salonen conductor
Viktoria Mullova violin

Stravinskys Violin Concerto is part of his neoclassical oeuvre, and was composed for Samuel Dushkin, an American violinist. The piece was used by George Balanchine as the music for two ballets, the first of which was premiered in 1941, two years before Bartók composed his Concerto for Orchestra. Bartók?s innovative work combines the folk melodies of his native Hungary that the composer spent so many years researching, with his exciting and fresh harmonies, and its unusual title is due to his treatment of single instruments or groups of instruments in a soloistic manner. The concert opens with Benjamins Dance Figures, to celebrate his 50th birthday year.

When this Rite [of Spring] was at its fiercest, Salonen looked as if he was in the
grip of a trance, as if the music was being hot-wired directly from his ear into his
nervous system. And we responded in kind' (Times).

Seefilmfirst tickets must be redeemed at Guest and Press Desk at 2nd Level box office for allocated seating tickets 30 minutes before performance starts

Since its official opening in March 2009 by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, the critically acclaimed British Music Experience has welcomed tens of thousands of visitors through its doors who have enjoyed the ultimate trip through the history of British rock and pop.
The last year has seen the British Music Experience host exclusive gigs from Bon Jovi, Jamie Cullum and Jeff Beck, unique workshops and masterclasses in collaboration with some the music industry's finest and most respected figures, and held a series of temporary exhibitions including the display of Andy Warhol's 1984

About the British Music Experience
The British Music Experience is administered as a charitable foundation and managed by an independent board of trustees, chaired by Harvey Goldsmith.
In March 2009 the British Music Experience (BME), a permanent, high-tech, interactive music exhibition opened within the world's most popular music venue, The O2. The BME takes over the 22,000 square feet on the top floor of The O2 bubble, The O2's state of the art exhibition space. A combination of cutting edge audio-visual technology and the most coveted music memorabilia of all time has culminated in the creation of one of Britain's most compelling attractions.
The British Music Experience enables visitors to trace musical trends through the decades, learn about music's influence on art, fashion and politics and allow visitors to download music from the BME archive. For the genuine musical experience members of the public can visit the Gibson Interactive Studio, a fully integrated space within the BME where they can play various Gibson guitars, Slingerland Drums, pianos, mixing desks and have a go on in the Sennheiser Vocal Booth. There is also a full public and educational programme with workshops, lectures, master-classes and concerts.
Hundreds of artists feature in the exhibition from The Beatles to Iron Maiden, from Cilla Black to Elastica, from David Bowie to Motorhead with in depth looks at musical genres from Skiffle to Reggae, from Rock n Roll to Blues, from Punk to Urban.
The British Music Experience uses RFID technology throughout the exhibition. Traditional tickets are replaced by a Smarticket which allows visitors to activate the interactive elements of the exhibition and also to register further interest in specific BME features. Visitors can then visit www.britishmusicexperience.com to access free downloads and discover more about the parts of the exhibition they want to learn more about.
Although predominantly an interactive exhibition there are key pieces of British music memorabilia featured including David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes clown suit and Ziggy Stardust costume, Noel Gallagher's Union Jack guitar, Roger Daltrey's Woodstock outfit and a vintage Amy Winehouse dress.

SIX DEGREES OF SEPERATION at the Old Vic 2.30 Weds 3 Feb

#23 Post by moondance » Tue Feb 02, 2010 5:18 pm

Just tried but no tickets left - but you never know.........

Can you get to the Old Vic for a matinee performance tomorrow afternoon?

We are delighted to offer a few complimentary tickets to SIX DEGREES OF SEPERATION at the Old Vic at 2.30 tomorrow. Seefilmfirst vouchers must be redeemed for allocated seating tickets, between 1pm and 2pm, at the Box Office. The show I only one hour and 30 minutes with no interval.

ABOUT THE SHOW

David Grindley directs John Guare's adrenalin-fuelled Olivier Award-winning play - a sharp, vivacious take on two worlds colliding.

When Ouisa and Flan Kittredge let an injured young man into their home in the middle of the night, they open the door on a new and enticing world. But is it really what it seems? Guare's witty play scratches beneath the surface of a world obsessed with money and fame - how can anyone be sure that people are who they say they are?

Inspired by the real life story of a flamboyant con artist who convinced wealthy residents in Manhattan that he was the son of actor Sidney Poitier, Six Degrees of Separation is a captivating study of society's pretensions exposed by one man's self-confidence and imagination.

The play originally debuted on Broadway in 1990 and in 1993 it was adapted as a film starring Stockard Channing - reprising her Broadway role - Donald Sutherland and Will Smith. This new production will be the first major London revival of the play in almost 18 years.

Multi-award Winning playwright, John Guares plays include Lydie Breeze, Bosoms and Neglect, Landscape of the Body and The House of Blue Leaves which won an Obie and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play and four Tony Awards. Six Degrees of Separation received the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and the Olivier Best Play Award.

David Grindley returns to the Old Vic following the success of National Anthems. Other West End credits include Honour, What The Butler Saw, Some Girls, Journey's End, Abigail's Party and Loot. His recent Broadway credits include The Philanthropist, The American Plan, Pygmalion and Journey's End (which won the 2007 Tony Award for Best Revival).

Obi Abili is a recent graduate of RADA. His theatre work includes Dido Queen of Carthage (National Theatre), Brothers Size (The Young Vic) and Angels in America (Headlong Theatre).

Anthony Head's television work includes the Golden Globe nominated series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Spooks, Manchild, Little Britain and the highly successful BBC drama Merlin. His theatre credits include Chess, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Otherwise Engaged in the West End.

Just received this which may be of interest to anyone not heading to film on Tuesday:

Experience something different this February at St Martin-in-the-Fields where we are hosting two concerts for the Buta Festival of Azerbaijani Arts.

Tuesday 9 February at 7.30pm live An Evening of Mugham, The Song of Nation. Mughams cultural importance is literally out of this world when NASA put together a greatest hits compilation to travel on the 1977 Voyager probes, a recording of Azerbaijans national treasure was included. Part Indian raga, part muezzins call, yet wholly and distinctively Azerbaijani, the Mugham has long been the song of the nation.

From yesterday's Evening Standard:

Free tickets to hit musical Legally Blonde are on offer tomorrow (today now) as part of first birthday celebrations for a scheme to get more young people into theatre. The offer is part of an initiative run by the Arts Council. More than 30 venues will give away tickets to those under 26, thanks to £2.5 million in funding from the Government. The Legally Blonde tickets are available to visitors at the box office with proof of age for performances next week. More information about the scheme, called A Night Less Ordinary, can be found at www.anightlessordinary.org
