I'd say this year's Oscars appears to be a far more open race than in previous years...

Yes, I would have to agree, I haven't been following the recent awards but I was quite surprised to hear James Cameron say that her ex-wife has been sweeping up all the recent awards and so it proved last night when the hurt locker won 6 awards. I am not so sure Avatar will win Best pic now at the Oscars and even less sure for Best Director with James Cameron.

Yes, I agree. The Hurt Locker is a real contender for best film and director. While I liked both this film and Avatar, I think Avatar was an amazing film and deserves recognition for pushing the boundaries of film a stage further. The Hurt Locker, however, does deal with US policy in Iraq in a way I would have thought impossible to get financed in Hollywood and it would also be great for a woman director to win Best Director at last.

I just don't rate the Hurt Locker I am afraid. I wasn't a fan of the docu style, I really like a film like that to move me and this certainly didn't. It was like Diary of a bomb disposal guy....

That's kind of the whole point, Superhero!

The film was never intended to be a message film about Iraq and the whole situation there but rather a study of the people who go and fight these wars and how it affects them. In a way, the film is exactly a "diary of a bomb disposal guy" depicting the matter-of-fact reality of the daily lives of the unit and then introducing a spark of conflict and disruption with the main character who is clearly half-crazy and yet is the most effective member of the unit.

As for the Oscars, I would prefer to see Hurt Locker take the major awards over Avatar (although both are good in their own ways) but unfortunately with the approach that the Oscar voters usually take I think it's more likely that Avatar will sweep the awards. For one thing it would be a huge metaphorical pat on the back to their own industry for breaking new ground and having a massive financial success during the economic slowdown...

Does anyone know where I might find a web site that's going to be streaming the ceremony live? IIRC, someone pointed out a site last year, but haven't been able to track it down... 8O

Thanks in advance

I once went hiking with M. C. Escher. It was uphill all the way there and uphill all the way back.
