Nothing to flash. I would say basic but basic meaning better than the constrained look of wordpress creations. Something along the lines of http://fmvmagazine.com/
Budget wise I am just going by common sense. Web development sounds a bit pricey.

Re: IT Help, Please
Two nights ago when I tried to shut down my laptop I received the message:
"Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 1 of 82..."
It seemed like an awful lot but I left it on overnight so it could complete nonetheless. However the next morning upon turning on my laptop it said:
"Failure confirguring service pack. Reverting changes. Do not turn off computer."
And upon finally finishing converting it said:
"The function attempted to use a name that is reserved for use by another transaction. ERROR_TRANSACTION_CONFLICT(0X80071a90)"
I thought my laptop may have turned itself off before completing but last night the same happened with the 82 updates and this morning it said it failed again. However this time when it finished converting I received a pop-up message saying that my Windows may not be guinuine! How do I check if it is?
Also, I have no idea what to do to prevent this from happening every time I close down my computer (other than not upating it at all, which doesn't seem like a safe option...) so does anyone know what the issue it may be and how to resolve it? If it helps: My laptop recently went for repair (at a legit place) and they put in a new hard drive and redid the system and everything. Did somethiting maybe go wrong there? These are the updates it's trying to install:
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2505438)
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)
Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419)

I was just reading c_t's post above when a dialogue box popped up on my screen, saying that Norton had encountered an error and was trying to fix it. Obviously nothing as bad as c_t's experience but a bit spooky.
Blasted Norton is the bane of my computing life (and OH's) at present as what used to be an intermittent, if still annoying problem has become entrenched lately. Norton and Chrome seem to be engaged in some stupid battle for superiority, so much of the time, Norton tells me Chrome is a virus or the irritating "Identity Safe" feature crashes constantly. Even doing constant Norton updates and logging off and on again serves only as a temporary solution.
We're stuck with Norton now for the rest of our current subscription but I'm tempted to ask for a refund and will certainly not use Norton again when it's time to renew.

I use Zonealarm (firewall and antivirus) which is pretty good and free! SpyBot is also useful and complements Zonealarm, and it's freeMs Thrifty wrote:I was just reading c_t's post above when a dialogue box popped up on my screen, saying that Norton had encountered an error and was trying to fix it. Re: IT Help, Please
Thank you, RickyRaj - I do know there are now better alternatives, including some free ones, but I do always research the options before renewing and I think that (a) Norton has deteriorated and (b) unfortunately, the sites I use tend to re-review the products just after our renewal is due. I don't really want to have to ditch Norton at this stage and if I did, I would certainly have to pursue them for a refund and don't feel like taking them on at present. So we will live with it for now but it had better not get any worse!RickyRaj wrote:I use Zonealarm (firewall and antivirus) which is pretty good and free!Ms Thrifty wrote:I was just reading c_t's post above when a dialogue box popped up on my screen, saying that Norton had encountered an error and was trying to fix it. Re: IT Help, Please
Is there any way you can let it do fewer updates at a time? I was once told by a techie never to allow my computer to install so many updates at the same time as it can cause problems (which it did at the time)canadian_turtle wrote:Two nights ago when I tried to shut down my laptop I received the message:

Re: IT Help, Please
Thanks but upon rechecking I actually noticed that it's just the "Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)" one that was selected and it was trying to install, I guess it was just a very big update.
I don't think the problem is with the update itself but maybe the initial install? If the name is really already taken (as the error message suggest) maybe my Windows copy really isn't genuine? No idea how to check that though...

Re: IT Help, Please
Would this conflict arise because it has tried to do the install once before and was partially successful?
I'm guessing now, trying to apply logic more than tech knowledge but I'm sure one of the tech wizards will be along shortly to tell you how to check your program is genuine.
Fingers crossed for you

As a general rule service packs are bigger than patches and hotfixes so do take longer.canadian_turtle wrote:Thanks but upon rechecking I actually noticed that it's just the "Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)" one that was selected and it was trying to install, I guess it was just a very big update.
