Zack's movies tend to embrace the unreal. So its no surprise that in MoS he embues the movie with a dream-like quality via its extreme non-linear structure, weak dialogue, cold illogical screen switches and wafer thin lead characters. The green screen is the star of the movie at a fitting time in movie history when Green screen has become King in cinema earners, but in this movie this is at a substantial cost to story content and characters. Superman virtually sleepwalks his role, blindly accepting his role in administering physical punishment to Zod, Inc. Zod and Louis Lane seem equally at odds as to why they are doing what they doing. Amy Adams Lane is probably the worst Lane ever, and that includes both Bosworth's toned down one and the dippy teen one in Smallville - a shocking waste of both Louis and Amy.
Perhaps I can see how the dream theme is fitting for MoS since Superman is the ultimate geek's wish fulfilment fantasy, to get the girl, all the superpowers and put right all the wrongs in the world with ease. And the effects on IMAX are pretty damn jawdropping. But all that doesn't make it a great movie. In a nutshell, three words that are lacking here - script, character, direction. Zack shouldn't be excused from not including these properly just because his name is Snyder, though I am in awe of his visual flair.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?
