The Way, Way Back
Re: The Way Way Back
Speaking of station wagons - and now I understand the way way back (thanks ejwrank) but did anyone else notice the rear door of the Buick opened initially sideways then later it flapped down. Still trying to work out whether this is a possibility (surely the engineering to do this must be considerable?) or was it two separate cars?

Re: The Way Way Back
Thanks ejwrank as I was a bit bewildered by the title
Absolutely loved the film and great subtle performances all round.
I am always surprised how Alison Janney and Paprika Steen (Festen, Love Is All You Need) seem like sisters split at birth
Solid 9/10

I noticed that too, stuartboy. I know that the rear door usually opened flat down (called a tailgate) but some did open up as doors and as Buicks were considered pretty posh cars, I'd say there was a good possibility that this was a tailgate/rear door combo but don't quote me on that -- we had a station wagon back in the 50s and they only opened flat down and then you could stand and jump from the platform which was always very exciting.
Just found that Wikipedia says "A 3-way tailgate is hinged at the side and bottom so it can be opened sideways like a car door, or downwards like a truck tailgate. The window can be opened to load small items. The door and hinge mechanism of the 3-way tailgate is heavy and sturdy by design. In the late 1970s, it was the most common station wagon tailgate arrangement."

Re: The Way Way Back
This was one sweet movie, even though predictable on all counts. I found it charming and moving, with some laughter and some tears involved throughout. Sam Rockwell stole the show, but at the same time I have to say the film was brilliantly cast, everyone pulled their weight impressively.

Re: The Way Way Back
I went to find out the runtime from the imdb page earlier and I spotted on the trivia list that:stuartboy wrote: Not entirely sure what the title meant. It could easily have been called Duncan or Just Duncan. I was also expecting a period piece - 70's or 80's, bourne out by the arrival in a huge 70's Buick and was thus somewhat surprised to see Duncan listening to music on his iPhone.
The film was originally supposed to take place in 1984, but was moved into the present due to budgetary constraints. Owen's comment about how the water park "hasn't been upgraded since 1983" and Duncan's REO Speedwagon sing-along are both references to this fact.

I'm also imagining you staring in wonderment if you ever come across windows that can open in several directions if you thought a tail-gate was impossible.

As for the film I loved it and glad for the extra screenings coming up to see it again.

A nice change to see Steve Carell in the non-comedic role. And Liam James did a fantastic job as Duncan teen roles are always hard in getting the right mix of character so as not be annoying.

Saw this in a 50% screening in Braehead . . . assume most went to see 1D or "You're Next"elski wrote: A nice change to see Steve Carell in the non-comedic role. And Liam James did a fantastic job as Duncan teen roles are always hard in getting the right mix of character so as not be annoying.

This is a very gentle film which I have to say I did enjoy. It was certainly a huge contrast to last night's film "Kick Ass 2"

It could easily have been a Channel 5 afternoon film. It will never win any awards but it was still a pleasant way to pass an evening after a hectic day. I would certainly have preferred a different ending or perhaps, a more conclusive ending.
