This show has the Whedon stamps all over it. Loved it but I think it's an acquired taste for some

I loved the series opener, very reminiscent of Heroes when it was still good what with
The Company (which is basically the same as S.H.I.EL.D., tracking down those with super powers, and even the exploding man which was the main story arc for Heroes S1). Also love some of the unexpected character additions, which they've kept very quiet, and the humour running throughout.
Re: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (Tv Series)
Very very good. Tons of continuity porn relating to The Avengers movies (From Cap to Iron Man 3), helping to set the tone, the timeline and the world, aswell as helping to torpedo the show towards to becoming its own thing. A few lines of dialogue came off as pretty poor and forced, but overall it felt like a Joss Whedon show, which is all i was asking for.
Another minor criticism i had, Fitz Simmons need to step up their game. They didn't seem convincing in the role at all. Especially Fitz, he felt like he was trying to be Topher (from Dollhouse), only without the charm, electric nervous energy or comedic timing. Making him very flat for me. Hopefully Whedon and Co throw more challenging stuff their way to help them grow into their roles and expand as actors
That being said, Can't wait for more

Re: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (Tv Series)
The problem when a show is hyped as much as this one is that expectations are really high. I was not too impressed with this. I am hoping it just needs time to find its feet and will get better...

Not very impressed either, but it's Whedon, right, I know I needed a couple of episodes to get into Dollhouse, so I shall hang in there!

so am I the only one who found the exposition very forced, borderline painful?TheOnes wrote:Tons of continuity porn relating to The Avengers movies (From Cap to Iron Man 3), helping to set the tone, the timeline and the world, aswell as helping to torpedo the show towards to becoming its own thing.

I thought the exposition was handled really well. It bordered on painful, but never fell into that chasm for me. So many facepalm cliche exposition lines were avoided just by a few additions.Celini wrote:so am I the only one who found the exposition very forced, borderline painful?TheOnes wrote:Tons of continuity porn relating to The Avengers movies (From Cap to Iron Man 3), helping to set the tone, the timeline and the world, aswell as helping to torpedo the show towards to becoming its own thing.
For instance, they avoided the "As You Know" plot dumps. They didn't need to re-explain plot threads that they already knew, yet made it obvious to new audiences what they were. Example:
"Poor man didn't bring an explosive". That line could've been bad in so many ways, yet in context it worked. If they added: "He brought one", for the cliche impact, it would've fallen apart. If she was explaining to someone else who already knew it, it would've fallen apart. It felt like quiet reflection and sympathy for him, while providing a jumping off point for new viewers to complete the sentence themselves. A painful expository line that was avoided. This was said immediately after identifying the word Extremis, but they didn't define it in painful detail, they just implied. It didn't treat new audiences as stupid
Another one, "This serum sir, very similar to what Doctor Eiskin developed in the 40's for the" "Super Soldiers". - Acknowledging he knows what the serum was for already by having him completing the sentence himself, but still letting him know that its in the Centipede. A detail he didn't know
For me, i think the biggest weakness is who is doing the explaining. As i said, Fitz Simmons have no charisma or weight to them at all. They make everything they say sound dull and painful. They completely force every line they have which is a big worry for me. So having them being the source of the exposition i feel is causing the pain, not how the exposition is delivered or structured in universe.

Re: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (Tv Series)
Not being a Marvel comic reader, your text went way over my head. I took it for what it is - an entertaining piece of nonsense, with one charismatic agent (Coulson) and the rest interchangeable pretty boys and girls (Fitz sounded like Simon Pegg as Scotty - why are Scots suddenly in fashion in Hollywood?). The plot was thin but there was a good dose of humour there. I'd say though that without Agent Coulson it wouldn't be nearly as much fun. "He doesn't know. He must never know." That line alone will make me keep watching.TheOnes wrote:I thought the exposition was handled really well. It bordered on painful, but never fell into that chasm for me.
