I loved this. Yes.... it was "disney" so there is an expectation of sweetness and it didn't fail, but I actually thought it was more balanced than I anticipated when it came to walt disney's portrayal.

Emma Thompson was outstanding.

saving Mr Banks

Saw this film last night and really enjoyed it. Tom Hanks and Emma Thomson were excellent in it. Always thought Mary Poppins was just another Disney film and had never thought about there being a story behind it. Knowing this will certainly change the way I view this old favourite again in the future. At the end of the film you hear some of the actual recordings made as the credits roll so don't rush out. I enjoyed the red carpet prelude as it was good to see the stars dressed up for the premier.

I really enjoyed this. Really strange for me to watch though, as I remembered suddenly how much my late grandfather looked like Walt Disney.

Excellent film, and I agree with stuartboy. It needed to be a Disney film. Loved all the bit parts as well and what they brought to things. The London Film Festival has really pulled out all the stops this year. I've seen some great films as part of (or in this case in association with) the Festival.

As most people here seem to have liked this, I wonder why it currently has so low a rating on IMDB? This is what I use as a rough guide until further reviews/opinions are available.

Maybe early scores on IMDB are from critics before real people have seen it, such as this...

A lot of the points are valid, but if you allow yourself to be won over then it's a wonderful film.

I have revised my score of this down a star to 1/5*. It's a truly despicable bit of historical revisionism, taking a financially vulnerable author and manipulating her to seize control of her creative works.

Here's my full thoughts:

I'd advise you read up on P.L. Travers - who in real life detested Disney so much that she stipulated in her will that no Americans ever be allowed to work on Mary Poppins again. If she was furious about her creations being Disneyfied, god knows what she'd have made of her life being sugar-coated and fuzzied up to make Disney Corp look great.

I on the other hand now look forward to this having been heavily criticised by the press, did not originally plan on seeing it as it is about Mary Poppins and that sucks in my eyes, but saw Emma and Tom in a clip and I was sold. Anything associated with Walt seems to up for flak but I would have greatly been disappointed as a child without his films as no one else seemed to get even close to the magic he created.

I really enjoyed it. Emma Thompson was great and came across lovely in the red carpet footage as well.

I understand people complaining that it is not a true account of her life but I gave up expecting films to be a true account of reality a long time ago and enjoy them much more for it. Real life is what I go to the cinema to have a nice break from so I am going to choose to believe the film version as it makes me feel happier! lol

I enjoyed the film & all the cast were great.

I shall soon be watching Mary Poppins again with a new appreciation.

Whilst it was enlightening, it was never going to vilify WD, it was after all made by Disney.
