I loved this film! As a huge Mary Poppins fan, I will watch it again with a new found appreciation.

The story of P.L.Travers life was so interesting and emotional.

Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson were wonderful.

I absolutely loved this film, it was both moving and very funny.

Emma Thompson gave an outstanding performance as P L Travers.

9/10 for me o/

Well, as someone who adored the Mary Poppins movie, the book itself and Disney in general as a child, this film was right up my Cherry Tree Lane in many respects, but I can't help wondering if Saving Mr Banks may hold limited appeal perhaps and that the general demographic may not go for this as much as expected? Hope that is not the case, as Emma Thompson was superb and the general period feel of the film was impressive. I'd give it a sound 8/10 in any case and would recommend it. Lovely, colourful escapism and nostalgia on a rainy Sunday evening was practically perfect in every way for me!

I was lucky enough to see the premiere at the BFI London film festival. I really did enjoy the film. I found it very charming and was fascinated by the story behind the film. I thought Emma Thompson was as fabulous as ever. Colin Farrel also put in a great performance in my opinion. Found myself wanting to watch Mary Poppins as soon as the film had finished!

For perspectives sake I should add that I was feeling rather under the weather today, but try as I might I just could not get into this movie. Perhaps the fact that I missed out on a West End Musical because I was feeling unwell was on my mind too.

Sure it had a lovely bouncy fluffy feel to its scenes and script and characters. But it was too saccharine, Thompson seemed to completely 1 dimensional (ie surly) and Farrell was as crap as he usually is (and he really is crap, why is he continually cast in demanding roles that he cannot get close to playing?). Noone seemed to be doing any film making, and there was zero insight into the creation of movies apart from occasional poncing about on a piano like college drama students. I didn't care about the characters in the movie enough to stay the length.

Utter fluff, sorry, and I left inside half an hour. The only saving grace was that I didn't p*y for this movie, because p*ying for a movie about the movie industry that kisses its own arse and expects me to swallow it is the height of pisstaking. We've already had one INternship movie this year, thanks.

I might have liked it better if my brain had been out of gear like on a Sunday morning.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

I really enjoyed this, lots of laughs and I struggled not to burst into song (which would have been painful for people at the side of me)

First, I get all the talk about this being a Disney-fied version of events that might not bear too much resemblance to the truth. I also thought that Thompson as Travers was a mere caricature at first, almost slapsticky in her stiff-upper-lip Englishness who drinks tea all day long, says no to everything and will only on pain of death be called by her first name. People in the audience openly laughed about her which I felt was not very fair as she only tried to preserve her intellectual property. They didn't have to make her sound so unreasonable, did they?

But slowly I was won over by the film. Disney isn't popular for nothing - they know how to press our buttons. It was funny, her Australian childhood was moving, and while i am not overly fond of the Mary Poppins film myself, I found myself swinging along to "Let's go fly a kite", and I really loved Paul Giamatti's character (who seems to be in every film at the moment).

So, as an entertaining film it really works - as a "true story" probably not so much.

Still, 9/10
