I don't use windows, but my parents do & the free inbuilt Microsoft anti virus software is very good & reliable, if used on a regular basis & kept up to date.

The slowing down of windows computers can be caused by a number of factors & installing more than 1 anti virus package can cause this, along with fragmented hard drives and corrupted registrys.

But to be honest, given that she is at uni, the best bet for her is to ask an IT savvy fellow student to take a look at it (they LOVE being asked to do this...hoenstly!). Trying to manage computers remotely is a tricky business at best.

Probably a stupid question but if I b*y one to protect 3 PC's I assume that they don't have to be at the same address (I am a bit dim at times). Thanks for any help.
has she tried AVG free software?
I will get her to look at that. Thanks for the suggestion and also to newdot and stone_monkey for all your advice as at least now I have some ideas to get her started. o/

I used AVG free anti virus programme for many years but last year it allowed two viruses onto my computer and didn't even alert me. I now use Zone Alarm but there are many free anti virus programmes that can be used.

What I do recommend she uses on a regular basis is Housecall. It isn't an anti virus programme that prevents them, it is a real time virus checker. Using this is how I found my computer was infected and it got rid of them too.

All computers need to be defragged regularly too which is possibly why your daughters computer is running slow.

Is Dell no longer regarded as a reputable brand for laptops? I'm looking at Amazon and it doesn't seem that popular now?

I have Dell and I have never considered them reputable. Hate them with a vengeance but was persuaded to b*y it.

In my personal experience, Dell have a reputation for having rather shoddy hardware. When I worked doing computer support and repairs, Dell seemed to be one of the least reliable brands in terms of hardware failure. When things do break, it's not always that easy or cheap to replace them as they use a lot of proprietary boards, connectors and other parts made specifically for them.

To each his own, but for a solid (reliable) and powerful laptop, I'd go for a Lenovo (used to be IBM before they stopped doing hardware). While a little bit more expensive, they seem to have some really decent laptops that won't let you down.

(This post doesn't constitute advice, you agree to not hold me responsible for anything including financial loss, unhappiness, death or divorce .. yada yada never actually listen to anything I say because it will probably end badly.)
