Re: The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug
Haha it was impossible to miss! Though saying that I think that was mainly because of where it was placed.
The picture quality of this seemed really good. Was it HFR or did they just do it right?
I quite enjoyed this. Could have done without that much of the spiders (or, you know, any of the spiders), but other than that I really enjoyed it. Loved some of the subtle hints to the rest of the universe, and really enjoyed Luke Evans as Bard. Cumberdragon stole the show though.
Can't wait for the next one!

Last night's screening was just in normal 3D. It seems Warner's aren't bothered about plugging the HFR version anymore.
Re: The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug
Well the picture quality was superb compared to many of the 3D films I've seen this year (Thor 2, I'm looking at you).
I thought it added to the experience.

yeah how come you could go in and then come out for OH, when they made me stay outside and wait for my +1?prettyxcool wrote:I arrived just in time to see Beate going into Screen 7, when I joined the end of a very long queue, many thanks for saving me seats. Lovely to catch caitlinmorton, cinefila1, pcrock and a_person too!

Far too long for a movie essentially about getting from A-B. I did enjoy it apart from the 3D - I ended up taking off my glasses through most of it as most of it wasn't 3D

Good to see Legolas and Killi getting a fair bit of screentime

At my cineworld it specifically says on some 3D screenings HFR after the real 3D logo.Last night's screening was just in normal 3D. It seems Warner's aren't bothered about plugging the HFR version anymore.

Re: The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug
I was REALLY annoyed that the lights were kept on for the duration of the screening at the O2 last night as I couldn't unsee it and everything was in my way (my bags, the heads in front of me). It also made the room too bright and the screen even darker in comparison - it really distracted me and made it harder to transport myself to Middle Earth.
As for the movie itself... I was disappointed. It wasn't horrifyingly bad and still a lot better than other fantasy films out there but it wasn't up to par to the Lord of the Rings films or even the first Hobbit film which I enjoyed significantly more. Agree with funthing29 that it felt at times that Bilbo took a backseat and it wasn't so much about him anymore, despite being the titular character.
Despite being under 3 hours in length it also felt too long and dragged on in the middle, especially the bits with Gandalf which was wholly unnecessary and they only put in to tie the Hobbit trilogy to LotR. I actually liked the Tauriel storyline and she was a part of the main action so it didn't feel so disconnected. Bard was great. Love him in the book, love him even more in the film. Also loved the Thranduil scenes, despite them being very few, and loved the Kili ones (yay he actually got stuff to do this time around). Cumberdragon made me lol as I couldn't unsee Benedict's face in it.
The scenic shots of the different locations in Middle Earth were once again mindblowingly stunning. Really makes me want to revisit New Zealand.
Overall, 7.5 a big knock down from the 10/9/10 I gave the LotR trilogy and the 9.5 I gave The Hobbit Part 1.

Re: The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug
This was a lot better than the first film, and I felt that Peter Jackson's decision to expand the story really pa*d off (that might just be because Legolas is my favourite character in the series). Smaug was also brilliantly portrayed by Cumberbatch, and, while the first Hobbit was a bit sluggish and slow to start with, this is fast-paced straight from the off, typified by that excellent barrel sequence. I didn't really enjoy the ending and the dwarves could still use some more characterisation, but all in all I was left satisfied. Looking forward to seeing it again!

Re: The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug
I was so excited to see it. Perhaps that was the reason for my disappointment. Because disappointed I was. It was not a bad movie, but it was just not as good as it could have been. For a movie that felt sooo long it really didn't tell much of a story.
