I did not find this as affecting as I expected to. Quite watchable but it did feel very long and protracted. Performances were all good and the film looked genuine but overall was left somewhat cold.

I have no desire whatsoever to read the book. 7/10.

I concur, I thought I would be crying but nothing, it really left me cold. The kids were great though. 6.5/10

I enjoyed this film and found the performances all round rather good and in particular Sophie Nélisse's was quite exquisite. The story was well told but unnecessarily drawn out and would have benefitted by being cut by around 20 minutes. Despite this I would give it 7/10.

Yes, I caught you laughing and meant to ask you after the film finished Beate, but I know that you normally like to rush off at super speed when the film ends .

Sau means pig but in this instant it means "bloody" as a prefix for other words like Saukerl being a bloody sod and Saumensch is just the female equivalent. It's very Bavarian/Swabian. (A Saupreiss would be a bloody Prussian and "saugut" would be bloody good. Etc.)

I loved this film! I was totally hooked right from the start with the out of this world voice. I found the acting to be superb throughout. To see the war from the inhabitants of a small German village, both adult & children, made for compulsing viewing. I found this to be very moving as all too often we forget that Germany had ordinary folk who were as fearful as there were in Britain. The film had the right mix of different stories all intertwined to keep your attention through a slightly longer film than usual. Personally I did not find it a film for a paper hankie as there was so much going on and so many positive things happened.
I was really looking forward to the Book Thief and I certainly think it was worth the wait! I wish all the free previews were not all jammed together in 2 days as I think I would have liked to see this again but would have liked to wait a week for another viewing.

Have to say I really enjoyed the film and yet another who hasn't read the book!

Very interesting perspective reminding us all that it wasn't only our previous generations involved in WWII. Too see it from a German perspective was very interesting. Those few with great power can dictate the lives of the masses.

Excellent performances, Rush brilliant as usual.

Really enjoyed the film. They could have got a different actor to do the voiceover for death.
