I thought the film was stunning, a filmmaker's film, Scorsese knows movies inside out. I particularly like the Hitchcockian music in the film, it's rare in films these days.
Yes the film is predictable and the only minor issue is he really overused those flashbacks/nightmares which made the ending much more obvious. But its the journey getting there to the end which is the fantastic bit and oh what a rideeeee, as you see one layer of the plot revealed carefully after another.
It's one of the best films I've seen this year. 9/10

Re: Shutter Island
I liked the strta of the film with Di Caprio on the ferry out to Shutter Island being very sea-sick made me laugh given his Titanic connections. I know I'm not supposed to think of that but I did!
being serious, I did think the film was well acted by Di Caprio and Ben Kingsley. I thought Mark Ruffalo got left behind a bit especially given his parts in the film.
I haven't read the book as Waitrose in Edinburgh didn't have any! Maybe I could b*y it like a normal person!! I might as I did enjoy th film and the twists and turns.
The musical score was excellent and added to the atmosphere. I was put off the cinematography in parts with eg sea behind them that was obvioulsy a film and they were in a studio etc. It's been a while since I noticed shonky things like that, probably not since the painted Vatican in the last Tom Hanks Da Vinci thingy film!
Still, good film.

Re: Shutter Island
I wish I hadn't been swayed by recent favourable reports here but had stuck to my original intention not to see this film. I saw it today as it fitted in nicely before a musical and a play, but I wish I'd seen or done something else, as I thought it was utter tripe and I was quite cross with myself for wasting my time - indeed, I was tempted to walk out. Still, at least I didn't waste much money as with my Saga Film Club card it cost me only £3.03! I had also thought of using Nectar points, but Vue Islington seemed to be having a disaster with their tills and were taking cash only - which must seriously have inconvenienced some customers and probably cost the cinema some business.
So this ties with Sherlock Holmes for my worst film of the year so far, and I hadn't thought there'd be two films vying for this dishonour. But there were definitely similarities, e.g. the vast expense no doubt incurred in making both and the fact that they featured a weird-looking man who can't act (Messrs Law and diCaprio respectively). 6.5/10 from me and that's being generous!
