Need for Speed
Re: Need for Speed
Saw this last night and I wasn't really expecting much from a movie based on a computer game, cashing in on the current 'hot' actor from TV, so I was pleasantly surprised
It's still cheesy and predictable, but it was a good, fun movie
The car chases were especially well done, and it's nice to see a movie like this go back to practical effects rather than just use CGI
A solid 7/10

I didn't enjoy this at all. Now I love my cars but I do like to have a story line which isn't cringe worthy at every opportunity. An eye rolling & disappointing 4/10

Re: Need for Speed
Totally predictable from start to finish but quite a few funny scenes and lines and likeable characters. Didn't expect much from a racing car movie but it was (slightly) better than I expected it to be. 4/10

Re: Need for Speed
I enjoyed this film more than I expected given the topic and the reviews from previous viewers.
It was definitely a film of "boys & their toys" with a small story to link it all together. The acting was fine and the cars were great. Yes, the story was fairly predictable but nonetheless a fairly enjoyable watch for a Tuesday evening . . . plus a vast improvement on Starred Up which I saw the night before!
Glad it was free as I would definitely not have chosen to p*y to see this kind of film.

Re: Need for Speed
I enjoyed this film, and it exceeded my expectations. It was fairly predictable, but wonderful to see the racing, and the stunts. I drive rather more sedately and stick to the limits set. I don't think there'll be a sequel.
The Odeon, Metrocentre, was full, and people were turned away. They always seem to use Screen 6 - the smallest screen - for most of their free screenings.
However, there was an announcement at the beginning of the film. A member of staff went to the front, thanked us all for coming, then said, "As it is a free screening, we would like you to donate to charity on your way out - staff will be holding our charity buckets at the doors as you leave." (or words to that effect)
This isn't the first time. I don't mind giving to charity, but what do other people think about this practice?

Re: Need for Speed
I agree with your final sentence, Andrews, i.e. I don't mind giving and I do, but... my own thoughts are that I'd rather not give in this way for lots of reasons.
For one thing, I have charities I have chosen to support and to which I donate monthly, meaning they can use gift-aid to increase the value of whatever I give. I do also give one-off donations (e.g. when people here are doing something for charity) but again, it's usually possible to gift-aid this money. Even when you donate goods to charities the big ones now have a similar system for maximising value.
Also, I often encounter collections of this type at the theatre and I do feel rather press-ganged, though I may resist. I would rather give (as above) willingly and voluntarily, as and when I choose, to causes I wish to support.
Lastly, whilst the preview may indeed be free, most people attending will have spent time and money on travel and might be on a tight budget and only able to go precisely because they don't have to p*y for the ticket. They might feel uncomfortable and forced to choose between seeming mean or giving money they can't afford.

Re: Need for Speed
Was there a specific charity they were asking you to donate to, Andrews? Otherwise this seems a bit fishy to me. I also gift aid monthly contributions to a number of charities so don't feel compelled to throw money in bucket but I still feel guilty when I walk past.

Re: Need for Speed
What the hell was the wonderful Dominic Cooper doing in this tripe? This was far too long,in fact it felt longer than the combined length of all the Fast and Furious films. Even at 90 minutes this would have been too long.
Boring as hell and not even Micheal Keaton saved this crap.

Re: Need for Speed
Weak. Has its moments, but its a shame they were few and far between. Even the final race was too short, I imagined it would be more transAmerica not a ten minute shootout on an impossibly navigable narrow mountain road (well at the speeds they drove certainly I was impossible).
A failure as a film but a fun adrenaline rush ride for the car scenes. Aaron Paul resembling one half of Ant and Dec each time he smiles does his role no favours.
On the bright side, the next Fast and Furious movie will at long last surely feel compelled to shoot in 3D now. Man, but Vin Deisel and crew would leave these jokers for dust.

Re: Need for Speed
I really did not expect to enjoy this film as I've never really been into "the car chase" and for example have not watched any of the Fast and Furious films. It actually exceeded my expectations and although somewhat predictable, I enjoyed the story, it kept my attention and the 3D was reasonably effective. 8/10
