Gardening tips and ideas
Re: Gardening tips and ideas
It seems that people in our area are getting rid of rather nice things as Sunny Saver has managed to get all the terracotta pots going from her neighbour (yes I am jealous) and yesterday I was tipped off by a friend that there was a rather nice hexagonal slatted planter abandoned on the pavement. She kindly let me put it her front garden until I could go back to collect it (had to drive it home as it was so heavy). Now I'm trying to think where to put it as once it's in place it will be staying there.

How wonderful and I can't believe what people throw away - looking forward to hearing what you have planted in it. It looks like we are all revamping our gardens which is wonderful.ejwrank wrote:It seems that people in our area are getting rid of rather nice things as Sunny Saver has managed to get all the terracotta pots going from her neighbour (yes I am jealous) and yesterday I was tipped off by a friend that there was a rather nice hexagonal slatted planter abandoned on the pavement. Turns out this is where some of the new film Pan (with Hugh Jackman) was filmed.RickyRaj wrote:Not so much a tip but suggestion if you want to spend a good few hours walking.

I am hoping to b*y some edelweiss in Switzerland as apparently you can carry 5 plants through without a special certificate - been reading up on it. The matterhorn variety is supposed to be quite hardy and will last for years ( I might be talking rubbish as it is just what I have read).
How is everybody else getting on with the new tubs etc?

Re: Gardening tips and ideas
Got back to my house, my daughter et al have camped out there now, and showed her what to split and repot. Now have 4 separate banana plants, 2 big pots of bamboo and a few pots of off shoots. She repotted the bird of paradise and hopefully it will flower again this year. Warned her about any of the bamboo getting loose into the garden. There was a big shuffling of pots and b*ying a couple of cheapie large ones from bms to finally get it done, and the composter stuff helped to make the 'soil' go further. Really enjoyed being outdoors.

Hi folks,
For pests and disease info on plants try www.shoot-gardening.co.uk - I think that is the right address. If not type shoot gardening into google. Its an amazing site that has a wealth of information on every plant listed on their data base.
At last ive started on my allotment this year. Sice its nearly a virgin plot. I massacred the weeds with hand shears. I have the blisters to prove it. Then I pegged out 10 beds, 4 @ 1.5x3mtrs and 6 @ 2x3mtrs. I could maybe squeeze another two beds out of it but I'll see.
Next step is 10 shifts to remove weeds and produce a fine tilth ready for plantiing. I have loads to plant - seeds and bulbs, actually too much.
I also have a small plot in front of my flat

Re: Gardening tips and ideas
Sounds like you have got your work cut out stone_monkey but it will be worth it in the end. You feel exhausted with all that hard work. After my trip away last week I am even more inspired than before and I'm going to get a trough at the front and fill it with wild flowers as by Lake Geneva they had loads of them and they were just so beautiful that a small tub won't do it credit.
I could do with borrowing you Baty to tell me what and when to cut things back.
Stone_monkey looking forward to your tips on the herb and rocket front. Preston hanging baskets from yourself please
Hope it's a good weekend as I really want to crack on.

Re: Gardening tips and ideas
I b*ght some ceramic plant pot feet from the 99p Store. Four for 99p. Let's see if this deters snails and slugs a little.
Also I planted too many wildflower seeds in a pot. How do I thin/separate them or should I just leave them?
Thank you.
