What I found most ridiculous was the total lack of any blood on her face. The rest of her drenched - face nothing.

o/ I noticed that too . . . obviously her insurance ran to having her face wiped! :giggle:
The other thing I noticed was that no blood transferred to the clothing . . . very difficult to do if you even have a small cut on your hand. :X
Preferred cinemas: Best: Glasgow Quay, Glasgow Braehead, Glasgow Renfield Street, Glasgow Fort & Paisley
Others I'd go to: Glasgow Showcase Baillieston

My husband really liked this film, it's close to home for him, as his wife reads a lot of books about serial killers/murders and he always says if he got up to no good, his wife would be able to 'off' him and get away with it :p.

There's a limit to how many swear words you can use per rating :nono:
Beate wrote:I think the 18 rating has a lot to do with sex, nudity, lots of swear words and violence, in particular one gory scene.
I remember the language, but I'm sure that I've heard more in many 15 rated films. There was some sex as well but don't remember nudity. The one very gory scene I mentioned earlier and thought that made the difference but there was also a strong propensity towards domestic violence throughout and I wondered if that made any difference.
Beate wrote:I thought the manipulation of people and media was the most interesting part
Absolutely, that was one of the things done very well in this. As others have pointed out the silly usage of the blood was one of the worst.
Beate wrote:there is still the couple out there robbing the money, they could shed some light on events?
Also the guy that was falsely accused of rape and what about the movements of the obsessed ex when the abduction was supposed to have taken place. There was a lot of scope left for further developments.

Wasn't it the multiple use of the "c" word that tipped it into 18 certificate territory? That on top of the one extremely violent scene was what I think did it.

I went to The Judge instead of this. Did I make the wrong decision?

A really unsettling, twisted look at marriage and media manipulation, with a host of terrific performances. Though it was a little long I was gripped throughout, and the final third is packed with dark, scathing laughs. Not the best Fincher film I've seen (I personally favour Se7en and Zodiac) but it's every bit as well-assembled as some of his very best.

9/10

There was a time that in my eyes at least, David Fincher could do no wrong. Admittedly I wasn't very happy with where he took the Alien franchise (I have however warmed to that film over the years) but 'Se7en', 'The Game' & 'Fight Club' made him my one of favourite directors of all time.

Then Panic Room was released, it was a good film but definitely not a patch on the three films that preceded it and although Zodiac did enough to make me think Panic Room was just a blip it still wasn't quite as good as I'd wanted it to be.

After that things went horribly wrong, although they were very well made I thought that 'The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button' was incredibly tedious, I couldn't get into 'The Social Network' because it was filled to the brim with dislikeable characters and 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' just felt like an unnecessary remake (sorry re-adaptation ;) ).

So despite really liking the trailer for 'Gone Girl' I have to admit that I went into the screening with the expectation that this was going to be another Fincher film that was going to let me down.

However I'm happy to report that didn't happen at all, the first act closely matched the vibe of the trailer, the second act took things in a direction that I really wasn't expecting and as for the third & final act? Well I thought that it was deliciously drenched in black humour and I can't understand how some people couldn't see just how intentionally funny those last few scenes actually were  .

It wasn't by any means a perfect film, there's quite a few things that happen in the latter half of it's running time that didn't make much sense to me for example:
Spoiler
Show
Amy not going after the two individuals that stole her money, the authorities taking Amy's account of events at face value & then sending her home still covered in Desi's blood.
But this film was so much fun that I was happy to overlook the above as it really didn't get in the way of me having a thoroughly good time. The one thing that I couldn't overlook was the ending, I must admit I found it to be quite unsatisfying and would have preferred a far more clichéd & generic conclusion.

Because of this, I can't bring myself to award 'Gone Girl' a 9/10 but this really is about as good as an 8/10 film can get before it steps into 9/10 territory...
