Re: Suite Francaise
Appallingly bad film. Suite Knees up mother Brown would've been a more appropriate title, as I didn't hear a word of French uttered.......apart from when I said I was going for a oui!
The 'Germans' decided to throw in a bit of their mother tongue half way through, to counter the cockernee, and one of the 'Frenchmen' also started speaking German to confuse matters more.
Apart from the complete lack of authenticity, apparently there was a 'relationship' between the annoying girl and German officer, well I've had more meaningful relationships with bus conductors, than these two had.
And to put a tin beret on it, an insultingly unbelievable ending........Avoid 0/10

yes, relationships with bus conductors are fruitless endeavours. you only end up right back where you started.ploggit wrote:Bus conductors?? Why do you need a 'current reference' for a film depicting an event that happened 75 years ago?ploggit wrote:Bus conductors?? Re: Suite Francaise
You don't. But you should probably realise that all the French people consistently spoke English and as such it was understood that this was to facilitate our, the audience's, understanding, without resorting to subtitles for the entire film. The German soldiers spoke German as appropriate, as they were the interlopers, and spoke English when they were speaking to the locals as was the film's device. One of the French spoke German - he was of elevated status and as such probably educated in other languages, here including German, so it was appropriate for him to illustrate this by speaking to the invaders in their mother tongue (or should that be father tongue?). He was obviously trying to ingratiate himself. The English accents were of no consequence - had they spoken English in mock French accents, it would have been comical.
You may have guessed that I appreciated this more than you did! But as we all appreciate from our broad spectrum of "subscribers", one man's joy is another's purgatory.

Re: Suite Francaise
I can only speak a little French so I was glad that they spoke in English so we didn't have to watch the screen all the time to read what was being said - I hate subtitles.
There could be no "happy ending to this film" as it was not the typical rom-com. Liked the way that near the ending showed that the mother-in-law was not as heartless as she first appeared to be by taking care of the little girl. 8/10
