Trumbo

Greenwich Picturehouse was absolutely packed this morning. Some people tried to sit on the stairs and one person was standing up, though I'm reasonably sure there were a few seats in the front row left.

I really enjoyed this for the subject matter and the terrific cast. It could have maybe been a bit more hard-hitting, though the humour was welcome too. Who writes in a bathtub? I hope they had another loo somewhere if he was in it all day long!

Only criticism is that I am fairly sure they didn't say "and the Oscar goes to" in the fifties, but "and the winner is"! Another thing that the PC brigade changed.

Enjoyed it but I don't know the Communist/blacklist story inside and out so would have welcomed more focus on that and less on Trumbo.

My review of the film from when I saw it at last year's LFF:

Jay Roach's conventional but enjoyable biopic of the blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.
Bryan Cranston is excellent in the title role, never too hammy but larger than life and always entertaining.
He's backed up by a great cast that includes Diane Lane as his wife Cleo, Louis CK and Alan Tudyk as fellow blacklisted writers, Helen Mirren as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, Michael Stuhlbarg as Edward G Robinson and, most memorably, John Goodman and Stephen Root as B-movie studio bosses the King Brothers. The Hobbit's Dean O'Gorman even manages a half-decent approximation of Kirk Douglas.

It's not a particularly memorably made film and Meet the Parents/Austin Powers director Jay Roach is clearly more comfortable with the more humorous elements of the script than the more dramatic stuff. The humour is welcome (which Louis CK fan wouldn't want to see him being funny on the big screen) but I did occasionally long for the film to be a little more angry and impassioned (oddly Louis CK gets the most opportunity to deliver this aspect after Cranston).
It's still worth seeing though, thanks to the great cast.

Central Picturehouse was packed. Lovely to see funthing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Good cast, good story, good historical account, good humour, gripping drama, good script!

Knew nothing about Trumbo or the blacklist, so a good history lesson and I liked seeing the real clips intermingled with the film.

Saw it at the Komedia in Brighton, quite full. Great performances by Bryan Cranston and Louis CK. Helen Mirren was really good too. Always good to be reminded about intolerance and witch-hunting.

Saw it at Central Picturehouse. The best venue I've so far experienced. Staff very friendly and easy-going. Film most enjoyable. Hope to have a chance to see it again.

I was also at greenwich Picturehouse on Sunday.

Really interesting movie as I didn't know much about the blacklist.
Made me want to research the subject and Trumbo in more depth once I got home.
Really good cast.
Highly recommended.

You Must Remember This, a good podcast about the history of Hollywood has just started a long series about the Blacklist. Will probably have all of the detail I was looking for - http://www.youmustrememberthispodcast.com/
