The Lobster

Man... this movie started so interesting and amusing, almost feeling like a deadpanning Wes Anderson film but without all the picture framework that Wes does for scenes. It also has plenty to say about relationships and categorising sex differences, a bit of a feast on that topic.

And then 2nd half meh. It feels like its going to build up to something even funnier but ends up going nowhere. And that strings soundtrack gets on your nerves after an hour of it. What happened, did the director quit?

4 stars for first half, 2 for the 2nd.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

I really enjoyed this in a weird way. The acting is brilliant, the story peculiar and it's definitely very different! OK, the string sounds were annoying after a while, I agree and I would have liked a proper ending but it's quirky and interesting and a brilliant idea? Go and give it a try!!!

Doesn't the ending suggest that the two of them are now unlike each other and so they cannot be together? I thought he had abandoned her when he failed to return, after saying that he was going to blind himself...

And ...I thought that Farrell was brilliant - not something I have ever expected to say about him o/

Watched last night in another BIFA screening. Another mostly empty cinema which was a shame as I really enjoyed it.

Some great turns from an excellent ensemble cast. Farrell done a good job in the lead, all very understated setting apart from his usual in your face approach. Loved the whole premise of the hotel and the characteristic matching. Some really funny scenes during this part.

I agree it kinda lost its way in the second half. When David joined the Loners it wasn't as good or funny although I was rooting for the forbidden love to prosper.

Not sure about the comment above regarding not having a proper ending and I don't think there was an notion of abandonment either.

It was just a did he / didn't he cliffhanger left for the viewer to decide. I hope he did

Watched last night in another BIFA screening. Another mostly empty cinema which was a shame as I WOULD have enjoyed it MORE

The film was subtitled which is NOT a distraction for me.

The weird part was the film was subtitled which is for some unknown reason it was "covered" up by a grey BAR that extended the width of the screen...... However you saw the top half of the words on the first line so it did not obliterate theall sub-title

There was a moment when they spoke French so the English translation was meaningless as English I knew what the word was, French top half of letters

Why they just didn't show the subtitles as well is beyond me as it was a distraction
But free film and that...

a very strange film. i agree with the first post in that i loved the first half, surprisingly funny but not so impressed with the second - but even that had its moments

. i enjoyed the use of music, even the discordant tones which i think was meant to annoy.

overall i liked it. probably the quirkiest film I have seen in a long while.

going to think about my defining characteristic now... I already know my animal is a cattle egret.

A good story, but totally weird! Definitely a strange rom-com drama, a world that is either couples or loners, but the two cannot mix, you can only be one or the other. In the couples world, you are turned into an animal after so many days if you do not find a compatible partner, and in the loner world, you can't be a couple, with severe punishment and consequences if you do!

A hard to watch ending - did he, didn't he?
Loved it, that if you have disagreements as a couple, you are immediately given children!

Clapham Picturehouse used their larger Screen 1 for this screening and it was packed.

You can watch it at home, if you missed it! Haha! SFF sent this message:

I watch this today at Rizy Brixton. It was shown in Screen 1 the largest and it was packed.

Strange film but you could follow the story line and there was occasions when the audience laughed
due to comments made.

I did not like the ending rating 4/10, .

Preferred cinemas Brixton, CLapham, Wimbledon, Wandsworth, Islington , Shepherd Bush and Central London
