Fingers crossed my new phone bank arrives with some charge on it as I'm out until late tomorrow.

I'm now level 18 but keep getting a blank map so losing out on Pokeballs etc. I even lost an egg as it hatched yesterday because the screen froze.

I have been playing this too! I am at level 21 atm. As others say, the hatched egg should be in your recent/journal so nothing to fear :)
Not come across a blank map..have you sorted that out yet?

My journal doesn't mention hatchling at all but I've seen on forums that others also lost eggs as they hatched. Hope that glitch has been sorted. Up to now today, my map has been stable.
I'm not sure I'll do much hunting today in drizzle.

Are you walking all your eggs Sparrow? I read somewhere that if the game detects the wrong speed such as biking or bus it will downgrade them, don't know if it's true but my better results have come from a long walk only.
My interest has waned since the 'bug' made everything harder to catch (which coincidentally extends the lifespan of the basic game), it's a 20 min walk here to any kind of group of pokestops so I just end up running out of balls until I can visit a city.
