Split

#1 Post by fraz » Mon Jan 16, 2017 10:59 pm

I can't say that I'm a fan of M.Night Shyamalan, I tend to see his films as mainly misses, always having to show how clever he is by tricking us all with the big reveal at the end.

Thanksfully, Split is none of that and an excellent return to form for the director. James McAvoy is brilliant in his role of 23, soon to be 24, roles. We don't actually see all of the personalities but he manages to switch between the main ones with ease.

The film isn't for the faint hearted. Having taken 3 girls captive, they spend a little time quite bemused at what's actually going on but when the terror comes, it comes in spades.

The whole idea of all these identities in one person and the acute differences between them such as mental capability, strength or illness, is fascinating and a subject I'd like to further explore.

That was terrific. I was rooted to my seat with tension. There were a couple of minor annoyances when a character did or didn't do something that would have made more sense but overall, this was a great watch.

Sadly,no sign of the famous McAvoy naked bottom but we do see some bare flesh.

I loved the ending and wonder if all will get the connection and realise why the cameo appearance.

Saw an early screening of this and it was great.

I really suggest people go to see it as James McAvoy is terrific in it.

M Night Shyamalan is back babyyyy!!!!!!

I liked M Night Shyamalan's The Visit which was one of my favourite films last year so I was expecting Split to be just as good. Unfortunately I didn't love it, there were a few plot holes but James McAvoy was brilliant. I can't imaging how hard it must have been to continuously switch between so many different characters, but he definitely pulled it off. Anya Taylor-Joy was really good too although I wish they had explored her character a little bit more. One thing I was oblivious to was the story line connection with one of Shyamalan's other film. He talked about this during the Q&A. I'll have to re-watch 'that' film (even though I didn't like it) just so I can understand what's going on in this film!

This is definitely a step outside my usual cinema viewing but generally like James McAvoy so thought I'd give it a go. Loved the story and thought James McAvoy was wonderful . . .now that was real acting . . .changing characters by changing voice and facial expressions. Although there were some clothing changes for the different characters they were not really essential.

It's a good B-movie with some questionable use of tropes, not essential cinema viewing unless you're a Shyamalan fan.

Which I am so this was one of the best cinema experiences I've had. Fraz's review was perfect not sure why this kind of thing needs to be mentioned outside of spoilers as it would have ruined that experience for me.

1) My comment was deliberately vague and posted as a warning for people to stay and watch as I've seen many walk out and miss that final scene.

2) Have you ever seen the amount of posts in these threads where people post major plot spoilers without using the spoiler button? One reason why I never read any of these threads until I've watched the film.

I would have skipped this at the cinema but another movie site kept posting headlines about a spoiler so I went to see it just to get ahead of that.

Without reading anything else it still shaped the viewing experience. I was second guessing Anya Taylor-Joy. I thought the twist would be that the Beast was real in a big way. And when the zoo was revealed I thought maybe animal steroids and non-lethal shotgun ammo was in play.

The final scene was a revelation but had I known in advance there was a cameo and connection to another movie I'd have guessed it because I'd already heard about Shyamalan's future plans.

Make sure you stay after the credits is always welcome but the fact they've managed to keep this mostly a secret and almost hid behind a spoiler is huge. It made no difference to me but I was just thinking of other readers still being on the fence and going in with any more knowledge than is necessary.

Maybe you would also like to lecture all the others who post major spoilers in their reviews rather than nitpicking at me.

I do if something is out in the open that affects the impact of a good movie (rather than just says too much about the plot), this is the last one I can remember - viewtopic.php?f=4&t=34131

I didn't single anybody out, address anything personally, spoil anything further and just expanded on my own experience with the movie.
