Whisky Galore
Whisky Galore
Found this really disappointing and redundant as a remake of a classic Ealing comedy. It seemed to have simply refused the original script and as such simply served to be a technicolor version of the previous version. There was no attempt to update it or add any original aspect. Strangely though the ship that was wrecked: the SS Politician was renamed.
Loads of weel-kent faces yielded nothing. The script sounded archaic.
Looked stunning, but it could hardly be anything but given its location on a spectacular Scottish island.
Eddie Lizard pulled off an Army captain with aplomb.
6/10

Re: Whiskey Galore!
Totally agree with your review, stuartboy!
I saw this is in Vue at the Glasgow Fort and it was close on 95% full which is quite unusual given the travel situation to this cinema.
I had really high hopes of a film that would be good but was somewhat disappointed.
Eddie Izzard was very good as the Army Captain and Gregor Fisher was good as Macroon.
Maybe if you'd never seen the original, this film might pass muster but otherwise it just doesn't have the laughs i'd hoped for. There is gentle humour throughout but it just doesn't have the sparkle of the original.

Agree with you both. Some humour but not up to the standard of the original. Kept expecting to see Gregor Fisher appear in his string vest. 6/10

Re: Whiskey Galore!
Caught the film at the Vue in Edinburgh on Wednesday. Difficult film to do something new with as the original was very much of its time. I was suprised how much I enjoyed it given I watched the original one Saturday morning on BBC2 around than a month ago. Would categorise it as a mild, 'comfortable' film - nice to sit back and relax to. Highlight for me was Patrick Doyle's score and the music generally.

Re: Whisky Galore
Maybe it's because I went in with very low expectations but I really enjoyed it. The visual quality of the setting was beautiful, the score was lovely and I just found myself smiling. Nothing all that original but genuinely heart warming and funny
