Moving to University

#1 Post by weliveandbreathewords » Wed Sep 15, 2010 8:03 pm

Heya, Im fairly new to this site but would like to ask all you fellow members fr some suggestions or advice :)

Im due to move to University in a week, and to be perfectly honest, I'm a mixture of being excited and downright scared.
Do you have any tips or suggestions about things I should be taking, ways to settle in, or even how to decorate my room without being able to use drawing pins or blutak? D:
Even things such as bargains in the supermarkets(on now) for me to grab before I go to stock up :)

Any suggestions/tips and memories are welcome! :)

cheers for the help

I have only ever been a mature student in this country with my own (shared) flat but I heard Fresher's Week is good for making friends (and getting drunk). How old are you, do you live in university digs or a flatshare?

Where are you going? What are you studying? How far away are you from your home?

Im studying Illustration and Graphics at Coventry University, Im not all too far from home but ill be having to b*y my own food and stuff for the first time.
Im 19 on the 2nd of October and Im staying in Student Halls for the first year.
Hoping to have found some new mates to share a flat with for the 2nd and 3rd years :)
And Ive made sure to b*y a freshers pass lol, there's stuff happening everyday like bar crawls and clubs, but tbh, i dont drink all that much since my moms an alcoholic :S

Congratulations! You'll love Uni, its one those eras that I will never forget, as with most others here...and it aint for reading periodicals at the Uni library ;) But please also dont get too easily influenced onto obviously bad paths...you know what I am talking about. You getting enough hype about the joys of Uni here, so I am going to bring it down a notch by adding a precaution. Spoil sport aren't I ;) Stay true to yourself and have fun, I dont want to put you off but I watched my flat mate, who was super smart in his studies, gradually disintegrate because he got hooked onto drugs by some influencial students. I was also a a little naive too but got out early as I realised it was all wrong, unfortunately I couldnt pursuade my friend who evetually went gaga.

Oh and its so easy to start your own society too with what ever your interests are in (if one doesnt exist yet for it). I had started up a table tennis society in my day, and we toured around other uni's with some legendary statistics...losing every single match!

Room decor wise? With me, it was a bunch of film/sports/sexy posters b*ght from Athena, tackily stuck on the wall with blu tac, all tilted different angles. (Come to think of it, does Athena exist anymore?)

Oh and dont forget to do a little studying too!
My film reviews here . ......My FMUK 2014 ratings.......My FMUK 2011 ratings.......My FMUK 2013 ratings . ......My FMUK 2012 ratings .

Do you have a VR headset? If so, maybe we can play a physical sports game or even be sports/fitness partners, hit me up if you keen.

no need to worry about any of that silly stuff happening :P my current mates have already passed through the smoking and drugs stage and i havent done either, and will make sure I dont mainly from family experience! As for the drinking and partying, I probably wont be doing all too much of that either since I dont like to drink unless its a special occassion :)
Well my obvious interest is movies! ;)
and reading :) im sure theyll be a book club around :D

and room decorating, id love to put posters up, but theres a restriction on blutak and drawing pins! cause apparently blu tak leaves stains :( so we're not allowed to use it! i wonder if white tak leaves stains :S

and I was thinking ofjoining the slackers club!
but unfortunately there arent any picturehouses close enough for me to go, since I cant drive :(

I use Whitetack at Christmas etc to put cards up on the door and wall and it doesn't leave much residue. If there is a little then just roll the stuff you've removed over the residue and it will cling to it.

As for any essentials have a look to see what the supermarkets are offering. Places like Tesco offer kettles, cutlery and toasters at cheap prices to attract students in your position. Have a look online first to see what is on offer.

You can also join your local freecycle to see what people are offering and you can request items too.

Good luck
