The Music Thread
Now, I know we're all going to have differing tastes on music, but it's a subject I love to talk about alongside free films and so thought I would start our very own 'Music Thread' to discuss, debate and throw stones at each other.
Right now my earphones are full of Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same" from one of their most underrated albums, "Houses of the Holy". I'm a big fan of classic rock, including blues/classical, prog and some metal. I also like some soul. Led Zeppelin are probably my favourite band, purely because of their ability to write songs, their technical proficiency and utmost care and obsession in creating some of the greatest albums of all time.
My music derives from the following: AC/DC, Genesis, Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, King Crimson, Black Sabbath, Chuck Berry, James Brown, The Who, and movie music from the likes of Ennio Morricone, John Williams, Hans Zimmer.... I'm sure you get the idea.
I sort-of dislike modern music, which is full of autotuned pop and profanity-ridden rap music. I'll admit there are a few good bands out today, and some of the old ones are still touring too, but on a whole... hm. Not a massive fan.
What about you? Any recommendations for similar stuff? What music are you interested in?

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2012" club. I saw 32, which is rather delightful.. I beat Mr. Glass on free films but he narrowly inched me out on total films seen.
Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2011" club. I saw 20, interestingly enough. My more realistic target was to see more free films than TheyCallMeMrGlass. I lost.

Good stuff Weirdie.. Led Zep 1 is my favourite Zep album. I'm impressed you're checking out old music instead of just following the crap in the charts!
My tip for today... The Devil's Blood!

Re: The Music Thread
i like most of the above plus:
brmc, the kills, laura marling, gossip, neon neon, crystal castles, jeff buckley, metric, lcd sound system, suede, elbow, yeah yeah yeahs, florence and the machine, marcus foster, le rev, chapel club, filthy dukes, nina simone, longpigs, kings of leon, editors, the strokes, white stripes, interpol......
i like lots of indvidual songs, from 60s, mod, through to 70s glam rock, 80s elecroninca, 80s pop (oh yeah early madonna will make me dance and sing), britopop, singer songwriter oh i dunno all sorts.
it's easier to say what i don't like i think! and what i like but don't know much about and don't have any of.
i dunno current things i like, which aren't all current are:
'romantic rights' - death from above 1979 (erol alkan love from below re-edit) - (ignore the terrible 20 second intro music)
'battlefields' - fenech soler -
'rambling man' - laura marling -
'walker' - cascadueur -
'face in' - dutch uncles -
'in arms' - david's lyre -
does anyone have last fm??
oh and wierdfilms... your assessment of modern music is only what's in the charts, you have to work a bit harder to find something else

Re: The Music Thread
I'm going to see The Bay City Rollers tonight (should be hilarious) and have won tickets to see Elbow (never heard of them until 2 days ago). I love all the stuff in the charts including rap (no idea why), Take That, Bob Marley, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals, Kylie, Tina Turner and any R & B.
Due to the above I'm not sure if I should be excluded from this thread

Re: The Music Thread
Im a bit all over the place but at the moment Im addicted to metal!
I love Bullet for My Valetine, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Metallica, Dragonforce(in particular "Through the fire and the flames")
But then I love all the gooduns like My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria, Fall Out Boy, Bowling for Soup, the typical mainstream rock stuff
One band in particular that I would recommend which hardly anyone has heard of is 'Creature Feature'
Purely because they are nerds, and the majority of their songs are based on old films
Id suggest listening to "Look to the SKies", its about the bodysnatchers

Re: The Music Thread
Like Diane, I'm not sure wether I should be thrown out of this thread cos I'm even worse, 80% of my my mp3 playlist are film scores! So I think I best stay away from this thread to avoid embarassing myself further. Though I will add, 80s and early 90s were the greatest pop era for me. From REM to Bon Jovi to downright weird acts such as Falco, had me dancing about in my trademark kangaroo style (ie without grace). There isnt much in the pop/indie/house/garage/metal/punk/whateva world that grabs my attention today anymore apart from the odd few special artists like Gnarles Barkeley, the maturing years of the Queen of Pop (mostly Ray of Light onwards), the late great king of pop, and Eminem. Most of the rest unfortunately is just noise which means I'm getting old...oh no.
I might be side tracking, but I used to love go clubbing back in the day, and a year ago my old friends and I thought lets see if we can still get in past the bouncers at our age at one of the central clubs, and we did. The music was rubbish but then it suddenly went retro playing stuff like Bigshanks "Sweet like chocolate" whereby I instinctly took to the dance floor and the old kangaroo dance came back from the dead...as well as a 5 metre radius of vacuum around me (it suddenly daunted on me at that point why I wasnt too successful with getting a dance with girls in night clubs). Really enjoyed it again but it somehow felt like a proper goodbye to it as I sure as heck felt way too old for this crowd

Kangaroo dance... that i'd like to see!
There's no embarassment, we all have different tastes. I've been checking out a lot of film scores lately on Spotify... ah, the beauty of internet, not like the old days of tape trading!

Cassette tapes, jesus...I just realise I've got several boxes full of them...WHY? What the hell am I keeping them for?! I remember the days when I would be sitting at my double tape deck recorder listening to the Top 40 charts every Sunday evening, fingers poised over the record button...crazy, it was like a ritual..
And I know I'm old when I cant recognise 9/10 of the acts Weirdfilms listed from todays pop charts
