Nights out

#1 Post by Beate » Tue Mar 08, 2011 11:21 pm

This thread is for sharing if we have been somewhere nice for the evening as I have been cluttering up other threads with this lately!

I went to the National Portrait Gallery yesterday with a bunch of FMUKers where they gave us entry to the new Hoppe exhibition as well as loads to eat and drink in the Portrait Restaurant. We managed to position ourselves strategically near to the kitchen where the canapes were coming out. It was a big scrum at first but died down after everyone was stuffed - although there was a cheesecake alarm again at the end, until all they brought out was cheesecake with different toppings, LOL.

Tonight, prettyxcool and I plus OH's went to the London Film Museum where, I must admit, I had never been to before. They opened all the party spaces for us as well as most of the exhibitions, which was hugely interesting. We were ushered into the rotunda first with little popcorn boxes in our hands, where drinks and canapes were offered. We then got a speech in the auditorium from a guy from Beatwax who is responsible for marketing stunts like driving an "Up" balloon over Tower Bridge, the Watchmen stunt in the Thames and putting a chalk drawing of Homer Simpson next to the Long Man of Wilmington. It was interesting at first but started to drag so we left the auditorium to discover that they had opened some side wings and there was more food to be had. At one end was a Star Wars exhibition and you could have pictures taken of yourself with a light sabre, jumping around. I had some taken with OH first, then with prettyxcool, then prettyxcool with her OH and then we discovered the only one with a business card on her (for the address details) was me, LOL. They will be emailing the pictures to us. It was so much fun.

The OXO Restaurant in London is wonderful, the food is excellent and the atmosphere is really good, lovely views across the Thames too! Could not recommend the OXO enough, perfect for that special night out. o/

I had a really awesome night at the armadillo next to the SECC to watch Mamma Mia. OH b*ght the tickets months before so we had excellent seats in the dress circle just behind the sound desk. There was OH, my mom and a mutual friend. I never saw Mamma Mia before it came to Edinburgh a few years back when I worked at it so have seen it countless of times. Musicals aren't my thing but I find this and Rocky Horror enjoyable enough. Friend hadn't seen Mamma MIa before not even on dvd but enjoyed it alot. Also prefer the live show than the film, though the film isn't bad at all. Of course 80% of the patrons were female and we did have singalong behind us but we didn't care. Since it was the first week, sometimes the actors fluffed up a bit by long pauses or missing a line in a song. But it was hardly noticeable. Also I didn't think the male leads had strong enough singing voices whilst the females belted out their songs.

Last night I went to the opening of a small exhibition in a 'pop-up' gallery, the council has been using empty shops and spaces to allow local artists to display their work. A charity will also have some some space to use and promote their services. One of the exhibitors was a photographer who takes the most amazing candid shots of children, my daughter has modelled for her a couple of times, although I say model its more like she play's with her and gets the photo's there's no posing and the photo's have been fantastic, so it was great to see some of the photo's on display last night.

There was also real mix of paintings, glass ware, jewellery, ceramics and some complete abstract work including toast sculptures!! It was a really interesting evening and amazing to see such talented local people getting the chance to show off their work.

There was a write up today in the paper http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/leisur ... p_gallery/

Tonight I have the 'joy' of Westlife at the O2, they are not really my cup of tea, but my friends 14 year old is a huge fan, but her mum is away so I am taking her so she doesn't miss out! Should be OK.

Edit : I actaully enjoyed Westlife!! The first few songs I was not really that familiar with, I would class it as 'music to slit your wrists by' and I was thinking Oh what am I doing here, but then it livened up and they put on a great show. My friends daughter who is a big Westlife fan loved every minute of it and I bizzarely enjoyed the Rihanna/Black Eyed Peas/Lady Gaga/Kaiser Chiefs melody they did, it really shouldn't of worked but it did, I took my 2 little ones with us and they loved that bit, the set was good and changed every couple of songs, the people with floor level seating were in for a treat when the band sat were transported out over the crowd whilst singing. I won't be rushing out to b*y the album anytime soon, but it was a good night. My daughter really like the support act Wonderland a girl group including Jodie Albert aka Debbie Dean from Hollyoaks and married to one Westlife - not sure which one! Again, not rushing out to b*y the album myself, but my daughter was tempted with the offer of a free autographed poster if you pre-order it now - well she is only 6! lol
Preferred Cinema's now Paignton or Exeter!

:P there,s nothing like a singalong at a musical, we did it at Grease and i met an audience member serving at Asda, she remembered me from that night even though we had never met :red:

It took me ages to finally watch Mamma Mia the film as i'm not a big Abba fan but it was much better than i expected, might give the stageshow a deek.

I was out last night drinking cocktails at Henry J Beans, only £12 a pitcher AND a girl came over and gave us some birthday cake - chocolate fudge icing, homemade in the shape of a giant doughnut - delish

Went to the Sky Lounge at the Mint Hotel Tower Bridge today with prettyxcool plus hdaniel82 and her OH. The view from there was amazing and the canapes were pretty good too, although there could have been more of them (and more variety), and the sweet canapes were served in the midst of the savoury ones, which was slightly weird. But we had a good time chatting away. Didn't see prettyxcool nearly all evening, she was working the room!

Well not a personal account, but the launch party for Nintendo 3DS was terrible apparently, far too many people everywhere. There were girls walking around with Nintendo 3DS for people to try out and pretty early on in the evening they had to get security guards to escort the girls around in case people ran off with the machines..... Enough said really..
Not a good sign for Sony's Experia Play launch party this Thursday if it's the same crowd
