LOL............I was typing similar comments when you were writing your comments! Great minds think alike...haha
mattymc13 wrote:Oh my goodness. What an average film this is. There's nothing unique here at all. A few years ago I recall complaining about product placement in Casino Royale. Rio takes it to a whole new level. It's like a gigantic advert put out by the Rio tourist board. My second issue is there is no unique satisfying emotional payoff. It's a massive Toy Story rip-off. We all know he will fly by the end of the film, but the manner of it was a total forgery. "You're flying", says Woody. Did I say Woody? I meant Jewel, because she used exactly the same line here. It's so easy to get those two mixed up... And not only was it a Toy Story rip-off, but you saw it coming from a mile off. We didn't have this level of predictability in 1995. Also, Buzz was a toy, Blu was a bird, so it really didn't pack any kind of punch because a bloody bird should bloody well fly. As my eight year old brother put it, "it was okay, but the ending was a bit weak." Couldn't have said it better myself. It just isn't that funny either. I recall laughing twice, and one of those was because of my own memories of a drooling bulldog, so that one was a purely nostalgic laugh.

Perhaps the saddest thing about this film is...I actually preferred Tangled. It was so much more charming, and it didn't rely on throwing in loads and loads of new characters making stupid noises to be, at times, reasonably amusing. And Tangled wasn't even that good.

I don't hate Rio. But I certainly don't love it.

Watched this at North Finchley this morning, Sky's Gala Screening consisted of 2 face painters, although I must admit they did a very good job, kids had Blu's over their eye's and down the side of their faces which looked really good and they liked the purple kids 3D glasses. There was also free popcorn as promised, which went down a treat.

I was a little disappointed with the film, I expected it to be on the same level as Tangled or Despicable Me, but sadly it just didn't quite make it. It was bright and colourful, but I found the music a little disappointing, I wouldn't have known it was Will.I.Am had I not seen the credits. the story was predictable and were we never on the edge of seats, no moments where the kids jaws were dropping. We did enjoy it, but for us it was just another average kids film.

As for the 3D it was very underused for jumping out the screen stuff, just added depth to the screen more than anything.

Another thing......why do all the characters have to look the same, the Linda & Dr Barbosa were really not that disimilar to the main characters from Cloudy & Chance of Meatballs, even the glasses!

Me and my boyfriend actually quite enjoyed this, lets be honest, I think the cringeworthy orange advert did put quite alot of people off seeing it!
My bf was purely happy because Germaine from Flight of the Conchords was Nigel, easy to please
I loved the vibrant colours, the songs and the dancing, would love to go to the actual rio carnival!
The only downsides were: initially they played a turtles tale, which I was the only person to go out and correct it, even then we ended up watching 10 mins of it, no wonder it did badly is all I can say.
Then we watched trailers for a second time while they orted the screen out, but the 3D was playing up, and there was no sound, after 5 mins they corrected that, then we watched the trailers for a 3rd time, with sound and in 3D and by that point some kids were restless.
In particular the 2 sat behind us, which repeatedly kicked and punched mine and my bfs chairs while screeching. It only occured to the parent to take him out of the screening 3 quarters of the way through the movie once the kid was having a tantrum UNDERNEATH the parents seat, and giving mine and my bfs chair a thorough kicking which we turned around and she quickly ran out with her kid.
She should have taken him out within the first half hour, I mean it may be a U, but who would bring a 3-4 year old? Or more than likely hasnt got a clue why they're there?
:wall:
Got my first ever sky goodie bag though I suppose, some kids activities and free popcorn which Im saving for Source Code tomorrow :)

All in all, I give the movie 7/10
The experience, possibly being my first bad one 5/10

We didn't get any movie trailers and there weren't too many activities for the kids (didn't KK say last week's screening they actually had some animals in the foyer?)

I saw this again at North Finchley this morning which was about 90% full. I still found it entertaining and even though it wasn't as funny the second time, I still chuckled along in places.

I guess I enjoyed it because I don't see kids films that often. It's only since I discovered this site that I've been to previews of animated films (Gnomeo & Juliet, Tangled, Rango etc) otherwise I would never go see them at the cinema. I guess since I have seen fewer children's films I am less jaded and don't have much to compare this against.

I did think Jesse Eisenberg did especially well as the shy awkward Blu. The one thing that doesn't make sense is why is Jewel voiced by an American actress when she supposedly never left Rio?

Well I loved this just as much the second time round. Of course it is predictable, it's a kid's film, what do you expect. I must say though that I think Jesse Eisenberg's voice is wrong for Blu, it's too distinctive. The water bottles and toffee popcorns were a nice touch as were the face painters although they completely blocked the way to the loo, which wasn't well thought out. We also now have 2 child and two adult tickets to see this again next Sunday at Cineworld as they gave everyone a copy of the Times Rio Entertainment supplement! I hope not too many people b*ght it before they got it for free...

I want to go to Rio to see the Carnival now!

I found it adorable!
especially liked the "supporting" birds... Nigel's song just cracked me up... "I poop on people, and I blame it on seagull" o/
I smiled a lot this morning but I agree with soonforgotten, Eisenberg doesn't quite work as Blu!

8/10 for me

Interesting I liked Eisenberg's distinctive voiceover. I guess it's a love/hate thing

I saw Rio at cineworld 02. There was 2 face painters and a balloon animal making.
We arrived 9.30am. On the seats was a large bag of toffee popcorn and a bottle of water each. Film was quite good for a Sunday morning.
