I don't know, I've been known to say LOL, usually in a sarcastic way, and it's been often enough that someone b*ght me a t-shirt. I've also been known to use words that are slang from cartoon or sci-fi shows and books, I am just that sad and geeky. I was using 'shiny' with the same meaning as it's used in Firefly since I was quite a lot younger, possibly even the first boarding school, so believe that was in common use within my family well in advance of the show.

There are some in jokes / internet slang from IRC rooms to do with a specific social group (UCIP), including some slang that I started, that I've certainly used offline. It's a definite head slap moment but it's also easy to see how you could use these words offline if you use them so often online that they become part of your internal lexicon.

hahah i have a friend who says Oh Em Geee and the way she says it just cracks me up. I think she also says L.O.L in the same manner. She gets away with it because she is doing it so sarcastically but also means it. She's funny. She certainly doesn't do it for anything other than taking the mick though. I don't know anyone else who does it.

i get why some people type in text speak , it's time saving but what i don't understand and HATE is when people will change tunes to choonnnezzzz give or take a few letters, and girls = gurlz etc.

It's not when I find something funny, when it's funny I laugh, it's when I find something that's supposed to be hilarious not funny at all, then I might say LOL (and I pronounce it Lol as in lollipop not el oh el). It's used to particularly good effect when someone complains you haven't laughed at their joke and you turn round and say something like "oh sorry, was that supposed to be funny, fine then...LOL...do you feel better now?". I also answer things with "Happy, happy, joy, joy" in a very depressed voice - I like using the opposites to highlight each other when I'm feeling snarky.

I have never said OMG and I think this is the first time I've even typed it. I've never been a fan of STFU but I do use Oh FFS offline because we aren't allowed to swear in the office and only certain people figure that one out - none of them being either of my line managers. It's also one of the reasons I took to using sci-fi based swear words, sometimes I use foreign languages such as Japanese, Cantonese and Mandarin as no-one in the office speaks those languages, I've even gone as far as using Klingon - but I use this sparingly as it amuses me and I don't want it to lose the novelty factor.

I might use some of the TXT SPK things like WTF? OMG! LOL! to take the piss out of other people, why would you say WTF when it's longer to say than what it stands for? I also call the other workers in the office barbie dolls for a reason, for example some people I know say XOXO - I think Gossip Girl has a lot to do with that - but I've had to explain to over half the people I've heard using it what it stands for why would you use something when you don't even know what it means? They also insist on dying their hair the same colour, when one of them changes hair colour you can guarantee that fairly shortly the other girls will end up lighter / darker to match.

You're from the 80s? I grew up in the 80's, I was born the year Star Wars was release in the cinema. You can't be old, no-one who is on this forum can be old, I refuse to believe that anyone who chooses to discuss films online whilst trying to gain free tickets to movies is old. They may have a birth date some time in the past, their bodies may now be starting to betray them, but their minds will remain young and cool forever

Star Wars was the first film I ever saw in the cinema at Marble Arch Odeon which at the time was the largest screen in Europe and the film terrified me, I was screaming (i was a wee child so un-macho girly screams was what I did then) at my parents because I thought that giant ship was going to crash into us, then I really cacked it when the this black cladded funny breathing talking monster came onto the screen...what was Lucas thinking? It scarred me for life...and my pants. Changed it forever...my life, not the pants. I became THE STAR WARS FAN. When Phanton Menace came out, I went to New York to watch the premier. I queued up for days too...oh wait, this isnt very relevant for this thread either...

Surely, it is what you make of it and who you are that matters, not the age on your passport. I hope, at least. But then, I grew up before the 80s (if I ever grew up, that is).
