I like this film, but don't feel that it is quite the masterpiece that it has been hailed as since Cannes last year. I definitely think that The White Ribbon was a worthy prize winner at Cannes over Un Prophete.

Un Prophete has many excellent elements, but in my view they don't all come together, so I found it to be less than the sum of its parts. It is very gritty and well acted. Very stylish. Certainly worth p*ying to go and see, and well above average for a free preview film. It is very long too, at over 2 hours 30 minutes, so be prepared.

If I am able to attend the preview, I will definitely go and give it a second viewing.

7 or 8 out of 10

I knew I'd seen somewhere that someone had seen it last year! Phew, not gone mad.

"A quality film that I wanted to love, but I couldn't"

They should put that review tagline on the film posters... :P

So did any of the other screenings get subtitles?

We didn't in sheffield, so when it became clear there were no subtitles going to appear 90% walked out leaving 5 of us to stick it out till the end.

Well I think someone did, he went out a couple of times and came back and then eventually left which led to everyone else going.

I know a little french and have always been intending to learn. I understood some words and phrases and got some of the conversations but admitedly not the majority of it. But all the action is self-explanatory it's just some of the whys and wherefores I've ended up guessing!

Whenever I'm on holiday in Europe I like to watch the telly there to try to pick up the language.

Ha ha, next time you are in Italy, watch the Italian version of Deal or No Deal, it's the funniest thing ever. The banker is the dottore, instead of cash some of the boxes contain signs saying "hairdryer" or "10 kg wood". The "Pacco X" contains a suprise sum of money, and one box contains a hippo. Whenever that box is opened, everyone starts dancing like a maniac to "YMCA". Genius.
