A Prophet

#1 Post by andrews » Thu Dec 03, 2009 6:19 pm

Nineteen year-old Malik (Tahar Rahim) is condemned to six years in prison. Arriving in jail friendless and alone with no-one to protect him, he soon finds himself drawn into the brutal violence and gang warfare of daily prison life. Taken under the wing of a powerful boss, Malik is initiated into the criminal ranks. Once on the outside, he is entrusted with more and more important missions. But Malik is brave and a fast learner and secretly has his own plans that don't involve taking orders from anyone else. Jacques Audiard, acclaimed director of The Beat That My Heart Skipped, brings us the winner of this year's Grand Prix at Cannes. Having recently won the Best Film award at the London Film Festival and being hailed by critics as a classic in the same vein as The Godfather, A Prophet instantly takes its place as a classic of the crime genre.

Release date: Friday January 22 2010

I think I'll be giving this one a miss. Although I have watched and enjoyed The Godfather, I did not enjoy Shawshank Redemption. It's something about films set in prisons. However, I've watched the trailers and I think it will be a very powerful film indeed.

Think I saw this on someone's scores list - perhaps they could review?

Yes, to think someone saw this ages and ages ago but us mere mortals will see it this year :)
Oh, I don't have tickets though...

Seen this on lots of people's top films of last year in the US and UK, tempted to catch it for that matter, but I remember Let The Right One In last year, very disappointing.

And no, it's a subtitled flick.

This sounds like the kind of film I'd like so I'll be interested to see what people think.

I'm seeing it on Tuesday so I'll post up an opinion once I've seen it

Really looking forward to it though - it sounds like it'll be a gritty version of "Mesrine" set in a prison...

I'd also add that the last 2 films of the director, Jacques Audiard, have both been pretty good - "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" and "Read My Lips" - so that's another reason to look forward to this one...
