Coriolanus
Re: Coriolanus
Sorry but this was a film of Coriolanus which is a tragedy by Shakespeare so to complain that it is in Shakespearean language seems odd to me. I thought there were other things to complain about and I found the constant camera changes annoying and I felt they couldn't decide whether to shoot it as a play or as a film. Husband thought it was great so you see...each to his own.

But it was a modern day version. They could have found modern words that people understand?

If it was set in Shakespearean (is that how it's spelt) times, then fine... but to have an eilte special forces army team go into combat armed with assault rifles & grenades, then when the explosions cease he goes off on one in that dialect - seriously???

Re: Coriolanus
I've seen modern day theatre productions of Shakespeare but they still use the original text.

Re: Coriolanus
It is Shakespeare and whether it's done in modern dress or not, they have every right to use the original text. And it was clever that they used the text in such a way -- for instance having the newscasters reading the news which was the actual Shakespearean text. I don't see why it has to be modernised and I thought the language was understandable. Everything does not have to be modernised in order to be understood.

Re: Coriolanus
Baz Luhrmann showed you can use authentic Shakespearean dialogue in a modern setting and still making it entertaining so perhaps it is the material here that people didn't enjoy.

Re: Coriolanus
He also used Shakespeare's most famous play, everyone knows what's happening regardless of the exact wording. I'm just surprised so many people apprently had no idea this was in full Shakespearean dialogue. They should have read my reviewfunthing29 wrote:Baz Luhrmann showed you can use authentic Shakespearean dialogue in a modern setting and still making it entertaining so perhaps it is the material here that people didn't enjoy.

102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

Re: Coriolanus
I was at Shitsbury Trocadero and yep it was jam packed full. Quite a lot of people walked out so its a shame Anakin didnt hang around a bit longer.
Personally I liked it and I thought it worked well. Obviously a lot of the text was left out and the play was pared down, not that I have seen or read it before. Ralph Fiennes was saying that he got the actors to speak conversationally rather than theatrically and once you get into it you can understand (more or less) waht is going on.
Edit to say I didn't like the mix of accents and James Nesbitt always plays James Nesbitt
I have to say it was one of the quietest screenings I'd ever been to. I must apologise to the people next to me as I presumed they would all be noisy and eat all the way through and I was very wrong.
lesson learnt.
7/10 but I wouldnt be able to watch it again, but I'm glad I did.
I must revisit Baz's Romeo and Juliet

Re: Coriolanus
I too don't understand why are surprised or confused by the "Shakespearean" language, don't you guysread Skaspeare's plays in school? I'm not even a native English speaker but I can understand it find in theatre productions and films I've seen in the past.
