yes in a way it would be better as a TV series, you could feel the depth to some of the characters but never got to hear their story.

I also attended the Sheffield screening where the film went off for around 5 minutes.

I thought it was OK, too much random nudity with the weird acting characters who seem to work/live in a barn. I expected the film to end up where the family is now rich and can afford a better/bigger hotel, but it just seemed to end back where they began. I also expected this boyfriend Steven to turn up during the event. The fact that he didn't make the telephone conversation part pointless. I also agree that the split screen idea did not work at all.

I would give it a 5/10, it was bearable, but I won't be recommending it to anyone.

Anyone else want a chocolate milkshake the whole way through?

Yes I agree I felt it was too long. Also thought it would have had more music. Almost full at Cineworld, Edinburgh and no latecomers but four guys walked out after about 25 minutes. Some funny moments in it and the mother was the best especially after eating the brownies.

Watchable but not memorable. 5 out of 10

Have to agree with the above posts and give this film 5/10.
The lack of music was very noticeable and strange being Woodstock? It was a shame really as there were a few amusing moments but it has to be agreed that Imelda Staunton was excellent as the terrifying mother.

Thanks for the tickets for this again folks :D

Very dissapointed with the film. Had thought it would be better did not really go anywhere. It was as if the came up with a good idea for a film then it just ran out of steam. Liked the split screen and the effects when they were in the camper van I thought were very good.

Thought mum and dad very good but found the lead forgettable.

Thought it was a big mistake not to even hear even background music
5/10 from me too

This does sound like Ang Lee's worst film by far....I've always been a fan of him though. I remember going to the screening of Eat Man Drink Woman at NFT and asking him what his next film is and he said "sense and sensibility" which really shocked the audience at the time...

i agree with you all it was too long and they did not tidy the ending up or some characters up.
mattgad i thought the telephone conversation with Steven was to link in with the character introduced later in the movie?
the cinema in liverpool was at most 25% full there was also 4 youths who decided to wonder in mid way and sit at the front for a while before leaving then 2 of them returning again later on and again leave after a short while. The movie started late as it normally seams to do at cineworld.
5/10 okay but not great

I saw this in Milton Keynes and it was just over half full.

I was disappointed in the film and will not be recommending it either. I also expected more music. At times the film felt like a second rate documentary. It then used fiction to show different aspects of life and culture at the time but did not really do any justice to any of the themes that it touched on.

I am assuming that all the characters were fictional - is that right?

It was really slow at times and I just wanted them to hurry up and get on with it. More music would have made it much more enjoyable.

OH and I saw this at Cineworld Crawley. It was shown in one of the smaller auditoria and even so, was only about 40 - 45% full, which bears out what others have said. Actually we both enjoyed it (with reservations, particularly about the length) and I would happily give it 7.5/10, but I agree with all the other comments, e.g. that there wasn't much plot; that some characters seemed undeveloped, etc. Also, I wondered why two major British stage actors had been cast, i.e. Imelda Staunton and Henry Goodman, given that they were both playing Americans. OH, to my outrage, hadn't even heard of Henry Goodman! Always nice to see Eugene Levy though (also unknown to OH!). It would have been much better for some ruthless editing; 90 minutes would have been plenty. I know I nodded off as when OH mentioned the scene in the camper van, I had missed it.
