Captain Phillips

#52 Post by nosila50 » Mon Oct 21, 2013 9:42 am

Tom Hanks at his best. Is there no role he can't adapt to. The story was exciting from the beginning with plenty of tension. This being a true story it was great that they didn't try and jazz it up and instead I imagine kept very close to the real events. I was amazed that just 4 pirates can overtake a ship of that magnitude and also the fact that there is not the facility to enable the captain to access firearms to protect the crew in these extreme events. Highly recommend seeing.

Jayman wrote:Good movie but maybe just a little overrated in my opinion.

The shaky cam was downright nauseating and the historical inaccuracies off-putting -- if Phillips could have been depicted as the scuzz-bucket he apparently was, it would have added an interesting extra layer to the story -- but it was fast-moving, energetic and reasonably intense. The Somalian's too were excellent! If Tom Hanks manages to bag an Oscar nomination but they don't then well, I just plain give up on the Academy.

7.5 / 10
How do you know he is a scuzz bucket?

this:

http://nypost.com/2013/10/13/crew-membe ... s-heroism/

throws a different light upon events.

how accurate it is, I have no idea (the crew are suing the ship owners for $50 million). I understand that "nypost" is a bit like "the sun" here, but similar accounts have emerged.

D'oh! I thought it was a great film and Tom Hanks was superb as usual. Shame to read that the real captain (if the news story is true) was practically the opposite of what the film portrayed.

I have read articles including what lawyers are saying BUT that is only one side of the story. We have no idea what orders the Captain had from his employers.

For instance.
There may well have been high penalties for not delivering the cargo on time just as truck drivers suffer.
There are always two sides to consider. None of us here *know* he is a scuzz bucket.

Which is why I said "the scuzz-bucket he apparently was".

To me that means that you believe the disgruntled crew though.

It's a shame people jump to such conclusions so quickly these days.

If it was just one or two of them I might have been doubtful...but ELEVEN opportunistic crewmen? I don't b*y it.
It's not like Hollywood has a reputation for sticking to the facts anyway.
Captain Phillips is basically this year's Argo.

regardless of any non-fictional inaccuracies. I thought it was brilliant!
It has has momentum all through out and uses intensity at the right times and manages to keep it fresh each time.

I must have seen the trailer at least a dozen or so times, and I was surprised with the outcome!
