British star Idris Elba has replaced Morgan Freeman in the new Alex Cross film.

Freeman played the sleuth in two thrillers - 1997's 'Kiss the Girls' and 'Along Came A Spider' four years later. Both were based on the hugely successful Alex Cross murder mysteries by author James Patterson.

However, the franchise is being rebooted with a preference for a younger hero and more action set pieces.

'The Wire' star will take over Freeman in 'Cross', which focuses on Cross attempting to leave the FBI and return to his private practise. However, he is lured back in when he believes a serial killer is the one who murdered his wife.

David Twohy is on directing duties, with filming expected to begin early next year.

Did anyone watch him in the BBC series 'Luther' recently? I thought it was great, and really enjoyed watching this actor. I have enjoyed reading the James patterson novels - an easy, exciting read, with Alex Cross as the detective /psychologist. I'll be looking out for this film.

And on another note:

The Cross franchise isn't the only one recently that studio bosses are desperate to add young blood too. Paramount are looking to revamp the Jack Ryan franchise, with Chris Pine taking over the character made famous by Harrison Ford. Ben Affleck and Alec Baldwin have also played the CIA analyst.

Pine also starred in Paramount's 'Star Trek' reboot.

I think that my hero, Harrison Ford, was fantastic as Jack Ryan (and I've read all these books too), but it needs a younger man in the role. I wonder what Chris Pine will be like? Any does anybody know whether they are going to make another Star Trek using this fresh, young cast?

Luther was alright. Not Elba's best work (that being his performances as Stringer Bell on The Wire) but good to see Mr Hollywood has enough confidence in him to give him a lead role.

I'm so sorry that I missed The Wire - it had very good reviews, but somehow or another, I did not see many episodes, and couldn't really catch up with it.

Oscar The Death Cat

From the screenwriter who gave us Hachi, now an unusual story about a cat:

'Where some see the grim reaper, others are visited by Oscar the cat. Now, it appears, the feline emissary who comforts the sick and the dying at a US nursing home is to be the subject of a major Hollywood movie. The casting .... has yet to be announced.'

One to keep an eye out for!
I once went hiking with M. C. Escher. It was uphill all the way there and uphill all the way back.

Isn't reboot and 3D the most overused words in the film industry these days? They are talking about making Breaking Dawn in 3D now

They're asking Dustin Hoffman to come back and reprise his role for Little Fockers. I think the film was finished and they are shooting new scenes with Dustin Hoffman in it. Production in trouble?
