"The battle against the Devil, which is the principal task of Saint Michael the Archangel, is still being fought today, because the Devil is still alive and active in the world." -Pope John Paul II "The Rite" is a supernatural thriller that uncovers the Devil's reach to even one of the holiest places on Earth. Inspired by true events, the film follows seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), who is sent to study exorcism at the Vatican in spite of his own doubts about the controversial practice and even his own faith. Wearing his deep skepticism like armor, Michael challenges his superiors to look to psychiatry, rather than demons, in treating the possessed. Only when he's sent to apprentice with the unorthodox Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins)--a legendary priest who has performed thousands of exorcisms--does Michael's armor begin to fall. As he is drawn into a troubling case that seems to transcend even Father Lucas's skill, he begins to glimpse a phenomenon science can't explain or control...and an evil so violent and terrifying that it forces him to question everything he believes.
Watched this today at Blue Water. Have to say was disappointed. For an almost 2 hours film you needed it to be gripping stuff to keep your attention. Sadly for me it wasnt. I love Anthony Hopkins in most films and his acting as usual was great but it just wasnt keeping me on the edge of my seat as i would have expected. I still say The Exorcist beats any film made like it. It was extremely slow and i had to keep myself from nodding off in the first hour. Very deadpan indeed.

Re: The Rite
Yep, The Exorcist is the business, The Rite brings nothing new to the table. At best a 2nd division chiller, with little meat and too much filler. People sitting either side of me were scared shitless though. Hopkins is his usual self, but still... 4/10.denisel wrote: I still say The Exorcist beats any film made like it.

Re: The Rite
....while I was watching all I could think was 'will there ever be another great exorcism movie?' , obviously Paranormal Activity came close as it didn't suffer from the tired old cliches THE RITE did.... and does it seem like EVERY exorcism movie is proceded by the line 'inspired by true events'?
