Film watching and making
Film watching and making
Hey everyone,
So I try to go and see as many free films as I can from this lovely site, but I was wondering how many people on here make films as well?
I have a crew and make short films as a hobby! Anyone else like me out there?

Re: Film watching and making
Well I have a desire to shoot and create some dynamic cricket videos of my wacky cricket team this summer. I b*ght myself a HD JVC Camcorder, some filters, a wide angle lens, a fisheye lens, a tripod and Gorrillapod in preparation. My 1st match of the season is this Sunday. I actually do video editing services for some clients, so with my skills in using Avid Liquid and Sony Vegas, I want to try make some funny videos as well as some bombastic ones for my cricket website. I am a total beginner when it comes to actual filming but I hope to learn a great deal from doing it this summer. If my enthusiasm grows further, I'll think about doing a proper short course if I get time.
So what do you use and you got any beginner tips? :)

Re: Film watching and making
I just enjoy watching films myself, but have a friend how has been involved in making a few low budget horror films.......I don't do horror so couldn't tell you if they are any good.
What type of thing do you make?

Preferred Cinema's now Paignton or Exeter!
Re: Film watching and making
Oooo that's a good set up you have there! I use a Canon XL2, but we do have 2 other cams in the group! Originally we made short films as a bit of fun and now we are making them to hone our skills! I would post a link to some of our work, but I don't think they are up to the standard of "this is the best we can do"!
We've mostly dabbled in horror for competitions, but atm we are working on a longer film that has several stories intertwined.
TheyCallMeMrGlass I would say that you have a great amount of tech and the main thing when filing anything is to enjoy it! Whatever you make you learn from whether it's good or bad
raineylb does your friend direct them or just get involved in them? I love Horror!

I don't know that she directs them, but I know she's been involved in a lot of the production, she is a photographer by trade and a very good one, I've seen the promotional stills which are very good, but I'm such a wimp that I don't watch horror at all!
Preferred Cinema's now Paignton or Exeter!
Re: Film watching and making
I rarely find a horror film that scares me although it's things like the dark crystal or anything to do with animatronics that make my skin crawl
My friend is a decent photographer and does a lot of film production work! Which i think is unfair as she gets the good gigs and didn't even study film lol

Re: Film watching and making
I work in Visual Effects. Only worked on a few Commercials so far, along with an upcoming ep of Casualty and the new series of Doctor Who, but im shopping my showreel around to places like Cinesite and Framestore to work on films (i may be back to update this after Summer)
But as a Hobby, i use a Canon 550d to film some short films, and my skills in Maya, Nuke, Matchmover and Premiere to make them magical. At University, we had this big whole Digital Cinematography module running throughout the course which taught us about the rules of framing, colour theory, making a boring image look good, levels of Interest etc that is great for 3d animations and directing. So i call on those lessons while filming

Re: Film watching and making
I have a rubbish camera but I take it around and shoot weird stuff sometimes. Mostly random westerns taking place in the street.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2011" club. I saw 20, interestingly enough. My more realistic target was to see more free films than TheyCallMeMrGlass. I lost.

Random westerns in the street! Do you have any examples?

Re: Film watching and making
I shot a relatively good one recently but it's not finished. Still editing. When it's finished I will post.
