Popcorn good for you

#1 Post by sarahjc78 » Wed Aug 19, 2009 10:55 am

Sorry..... I had to post this.... Makes me feel better for the copious amounts of popcorn my boyfriend and I go through at these screenings :P

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Popcorn is the latest and most unlikely food shown to have health-boosting properties.

The traditional cinema snack contains "surprisingly large" amounts of healthy antioxidant plant chemicals called polyphenols, scientists have found.

Tests showed that the compounds account for 2.5% of popcorn kernels by weight - higher levels than were seen in a range of other cereal products.

Polyphenols, also found in fruits, vegetables, chocolate, wine, coffee and tea, are known to protect the heart and reduce the risk of cancer.

US chemist Dr Joe Vinson, who made the discovery, said: "We really were surprised by the levels of polyphenols we found in popcorn. I guess its because it's not processed. You get all the wonderful ingredients of the corn undiluted and protected by the skin. In my opinion it's a good health food."

Dr Vinson's research supports the idea that polyphenols in whole grains, rather than their fibre content, is what makes them healthy.

His team at the University of Scanton in Pennsylvania analysed a range of whole grain breakfast cereals and snacks.

The researchers found the products contained similar levels of antioxidants per gram as fruits and vegetables.

Popcorn was one of the richest sources. In comparison, breakfast cereals had polyphenol levels ranging from 0.03% to 0.5% by weight.

The findings were presented at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in Washington DC.

LOL - This is obviously a backlash to the research that came out last week saying cinema popcorn contains more salt than an adult should eat in a day.

Popcorn at the cinema has been branded a heath threat.
Health chiefs found that a large bag of popcorn at some cinemas contained more salt than an adult should consume in a day. A small bag of popcorn exceeded the daily salt intake for children.

Researchers for Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) analysed the favourite screen snack at several cinema chains, including Apollo, Odeon, Vue, Picturehouse and Empire.
Vue Cinemas (pic) came out the worst - with their large popcorn containing over seven grams of salt. It far exceeds the recommended daily limit of six grams of salt for adults and three grams for kids.
A spokesperson for Vue Cinemas said, "We will discuss the findings with our supplier."
Popcorn at Showcase cinema was praised for only containing 1.46 grams of salt in a large portion.

Oh I am sure popcorn without any salt or sugar would be good for you but who would actually eat that? I like sweet popcorn but don't b*y it much due to the extortionate prices!

Every cinema near me has a mini Tesco practically next door to it, which must annoy the cinema owners no end...
I've always hoped that they'd start selling popcorn to go with drinks/sweets :)

Cineworld Wood Green tried to decomission my crisps some time ago and I opted for my refund and went to the cinema next door! I 'm not so sure the cinemas would allow you to b*y popcorn from somewhere else unless you hide it in your bag, mind you my crisps were in the bag!

I always go to the cinema with my own bottle of drink, and sometimes with a sandwich in my bag. I would be furious if they tried to tell me I could not consume that in their cinema! Haven't found an usher yet who cares about enforcing cinema policy on me though.
