To Rome With Love

#1 Post by yogi » Wed Apr 04, 2012 3:02 pm

I couldn't find a thread for this, so thought I'd start one.

After not really enjoying a Woody Allen film since Sweet and Lowdown, I'm actually looking forward to this after the wonderful Midnight in Paris.

Smiled throughout the trailer, some good one liners and good to see Woody back on screen AND with a wife who is actually close to his age.

I watched this at a press screening and it was absurdly funny although overall not as good as Midnight in Paris in my opinion. The Italian actors steal the show hands down and Penelope Cruz is great too. One thing though, and this is a criticism I had with Vicky Cristina Barcelona as well, the English dialogue is so unnatural and particularly in this film, very stilted in places. Alison Pill, who I usually love, is frankly robotic in her line delivery as are Jesse Eisenberg and Ellen Page but the latter two are more forgiveable because of their storyline.

But yeah, a very enjoyable film but maybe a step down from MiP.

Saw this at a press screening this morning. Good to have friends in high places o/

I really liked this film. Whilst it is essentially four stories running concurrent but independent from each other it is not a new format of film making.

The first story is Milly and Antonio who are newly weds who are in Rome as Antonio has been offered a job by his uncles. Their story is told in Italian and involves a prostitute, an famous actor and a burglar.

The second story is Hayley and Michelangelo who fall in love after a chance meeting and who's story becomes a back story to his father's Giancarlo who loves singing in the shower and her father Jerry who sees an opportunity to make Giancarlo world known.

The third story is Leopoldo, an ordinary guy who overnight becomes famous with no explanation. And how he deals with being a celebrity for being famous for being famous.

The last story is John who lived in Rome 30 years ago who meets Jack whilst wandering his old haunts. As the story progress John becomes Jack’s future self or Jack’s conscience personified as Jack becomes attracted with his girlfriend Sally's friend Monica.

Never seen Midnight In Paris so can't compared but it was wonderful to see Rome used as a back drop especially as I have been before 7/10

I must say that I am pretty biased because Rome is the town where I was born and raised and I could recognize every single street where the movie was shot, but I really enjoyed this. It was nice to see Mr Allen acting again, but Roberto Benigni and Penelope Cruz were the real stars in my opinion. The only very annoying thing was the constant product placement in nearly all the scenes and I didn't understand what the initial and final narrators were for, they were both pretty lame and useless. 7.5/10 for me
