Why do we do this?

#1 Post by stevenjobs » Tue Mar 05, 2013 11:49 am

I spend a lot of time playing games, reading books and watching films. Do you ever wonder why you spend so much time devoted to being in fantasy worlds?

Sometimes I feel like I am rejecting reality, it feels as if reality isn't good enough. This bothers me a bit, do any of you lot ever feel like this?

I spend hours watching films as they give me great pleasure and entertainment. I read some books and only a few get me hooked. Some escapism is good and helps you switch off from the busy world that we live in. :)

I totally agree. I love to settle down with a good book or film, and take time out of the hectic London life. It what keeps me working hard :D

I enjoy non-fiction books and documentaries. I don't regard them as escapism in the same way, more a distraction of another type.

I sometimes act out scenarios from my imagination(usually before I get them down on paper), not sure if that makes me crazy or just secretly want to be an actor(considering my mom wouldnt let me do drama at school, im hoping this is the reason)

Seve Jobs talking from the dead? Surely he's in a bit of a fantasy world? :p
I never read books, never have time to; girlfriend, college, cycling and favourite tv shows tend to swing my preferences away from games and books!

I do this when I'm on holiday thinking ooh I could live here forever especially when I visit palaces imagining being dressed in all the finery (I would have probably been one of the maids in the kitchen if I lived there) or when I go walking in the countryside imagining living the simple life being self sufficient etc but in reality I'm very driven and focused and I know that deep down I do like being in the rat race. I think its good to escape from reality from time to time and switching off is self preservation.

Sorry, the reason I have been away from the forum for a while is because I just returned from an archaeological trip on an uncharted Island. It was hell. We were bloody shipwrecked then every time a rescue plane arrives it crashes. There was something about this evil island that wasnt letting us off. Thought I will be stuck there forever. Then it got worse, there are these previous shipwrecked Islanders trying to kill us. Unbelievable. I got seperated from the others and I had to build up my skills, hunt food, kill a LOT of bad guys but happily I got to raid tombs and collect a lot of treasure at the same time. Glad to be back now.

So what's this thread about then? That's a great question, well I think I am very much grounded in reality :)

Since the beginning of the human race, they have entertained themselves with sticks and stones. Its in our nature to want to enjoy life. Just as we need 7-8hrs sleep to allow our bodies to recover and heal itself from the physical day to day stresses we also need mental stimulation via entertainment. Each type of entertainment, stimulates different skills too. Gamers develop faster reaction and puzzle solving skills (potentially). Reading books provide knowledge and diversity of society, history and yes fantasy but its all a stimulant for our minds that can actually helps us with our daily chores and pa*d work. What we need is discipline in splitting that time between work and play, in order to progress in our lives and provide quality parenthood time to our children or family.
