The Life and Times of HMV

#1 Post by dfletch08 » Thu Mar 21, 2013 2:32 pm

One day left before my local HMV closes its doors forever. As I walked up and down the aisles I could not believe the outrageously high prices. Talk about “you can't teach an old dog new tricks”. With one day to go I didn't expect a give-a-way but I expected them to go down with a fight. I for one will be happy to see the closure of this store and many other alike. That's Entertainment has paved the way for affordable entertainment on the high-street and I am even finding myself less cynical about second hand DVD's.

As for ASDA...is it just me or has the price of their DVD's remained high since HMV's failings?

I went to HMV Trocadero last night (also closing soon) and bagged myself The Big Bang Theory S2 and S3 for £5 each, which I thought a steal!

Actually thought it was quite sad walking around though as the CD department in particular was creepily empty with just a handful of offerings left.

they were a ridiculously priced store and they pa*d the price for their policy. When we were young, if fellow youngsters were willing to spend money there it was usually a good yardstick to appraise their pecuniary background on back in the North east - its was a middle class store back there and back then. These days I have grown to see it as a decentfallback for purchasing something I cant find elsewhere, or even on occasion doing the b*y it/use it/take it back and get a refund if I couldn't afford it.

However this doesn't detract from the crap the staff now have to put up with in finding new jobs, the poor souls. They never worked less hard than staff in other shops just because of their store's pricing policy. Its so not fair on them, losing a job is not the price to p*y for charging a few quid more on CDs and DVDs from me on the odd occasion I went to them.

It was going to end anyway, ten years from now few media items will be in material form, so a shop that sells lumps of plastic encoded with tv and audio has to close soon. However much you are aware of this as a staff member, if you've invested half your adult life into it, its a nightmare rebuilding your career elsewhere in encroaching middle age.

Now that is a good bargain. Nothing like that here.

As for the staff...there are casualties in any war and HMV have lost the price war. I am out of a job myself next week so don't tell me I have no care for the staff!

Everything with a blue cross sticker is at least another 50% off even if the tag doesn't list it ;)

the bits that stood out for me were the game item trays with bits of Wii in them like discarded cheap souls being flogged out for a £1 each.

HMV were always ridiculously highly priced by comparison to other stores available, shame to see such a store go! but i agree they should have tried harder before it got so bad! they never really caught up with the very competitive market of entertainment, i remember a day when HMV was the only high street option and we had to go there but it's been nearly 10 yrs since i used them tbh with all the other more affordable options out there x
