Mud

#1 Post by RAZORBACK » Fri Apr 26, 2013 11:42 pm

Can't find a discussion thread for this so thought I'd get one started prior to the screening on Sunday morning:

Really enjoyed 'Take Shelter' so have reasonably high expectations for this flick, my only concern is that I find Reece Witherspoon incredibly irritating so hoping she won't ruin this for me :cross: ...

Read one review (well just the bottom paragraph to avoid any potential spoilers) earlier today which gave it 4/5, it also said something along the lines of that this was a film about men, made for men and was unlikely to pick up a large female following  ...

How sexist.

It has Matthew McConaughey with his shirt off, that will attract some female following :p

I don't care much about him. My attraction at the moment are the comfy Picturehouse seats if I need a bit of a lie in...

Just as long as you don't snore if you nod off or else people will be writing about you in the thread about latecomers and other nuisances lol

I do like the trailer for this film though. I enjoy Matt McC when he is in sinister mode.

Really enjoyed it !very well acted and slow paced to explain the story.

Glad I got up on a Sunday morning to see this at Brixton but was not impressed with the 30 minutes of trailers :(

I thought this was really rather good! Very atmospheric coming-of-age story that reminded me a little bit of Stand By Me. The boy characters were very good and this is the first film in ages in which McConaughey doesn't annoy the hell out of me. It's about growing up, relationships and small town America, and it held my attention to the end. I haven't got a clue why we had some walk-outs half-way through!

It's got to be full moon though or something judging from the amount of idiots around us. I was the very first person in and up the stairs and the usher tried to tell me that I had to exchange my member ticket printout for a real ticket downstairs! I had to explain to him that you just scan the barcode on it (it even says on the printout to "go straight to the screen"!) and then he scanned the ticket of the man behind me first who promptly overtook me and proceeded to take the seats we always choose! I am afraid I wasn't letting him have them, I was there first and the usher shouldn't have let him queue-jump! If he had chosen any other seat, I wouldn't have said anything but what's too much is too much. Then while I was talking to jojojoanne, someone again wanted to have my seat. Which had a handbag and a coat on it. Are people stupid? Like OH would block an extra seat with a woman's handbag for no one... And what is it with people talking all the way through the trailers? If you are not interested in them, you can still shut the f**k up so others can hear them! Unfortunately none of the other FMUKers I saw today was early enough to sit by us. In the middle of the film, all of a sudden a woman in the row in front of us turned round and said very loudly to the guy behind her to stop kicking her seat!
Oh yeah, and the air con was on so loudly and so high that I had to put my coat all around me and was still shivering!

The only saving grace was the Taperia next door doling out free small portions of vegetarian Paella when we walked past.

So the film gets an 8/10, the cinema and audience a 4/10.

Really enjoyed this, great performances from all of the cast (even Ms Witherspoon was okay 8O ) and I found the slow burning storyline to be pretty gripping throughout.

I would have like Michael Shannon's character to have been more involved with events and although it wasn't quite as good as 'Take Shelter' it fully deserves an 8/10 from me...
