Caught a trailer before Wadjda for this - looks very strange and is in black and white!

Boo. B+W sucks.
Artistically it has its merits but in this technological age we expect colour. We see in colour after all!
I stand by this even with The Artist although this was clearly emulating the bygone age of silent films of the 20s.

Cineworld Unlimited is cheating! ;-)

I also saw the trailer and was going to post about the lack of colour but there was no thread at that point and I hadn't time. But this sepia, or whatever it is, is another nail in the coffin of the film for me. I've yet to see the much-lauded Greta Gerwig in anything which justified the praise heaped on her and yes, I do expect and prefer colour!

Saw this tonight in an over-heated cinema. Just aswell its a short film although it did seem a bit longer! We had more than a dozen walk-outs...sitting in that heat watching a boring film, must be mad! 2/10

First of all, sorry for messing up Free Films - Frances Ha on the 16th is for Telegraph, not Times+.

Anyway, saw this tonight at Cineworld WIQ. Lovely to see cinefila1, tsoiboy and PXC, who as usual doled out goodies. I always feel so inadequate when she brings them out!

I can't say I liked this much. I don't know what was more annoying - the lack of colour or the irritating main characters. The black and white seriously irritated me because it's just a cheap trick these days trying to make something look arty and French. "The Artist" was great because the black (actually blue) and white had a purpose for the story there. Here, it absolutely didn't.

So there is Frances, speaking in irritating youth speak, bumbling about her life, from one apartment, job and boyfriend to another, the one constant in her life being her BFF Sophie who wears the ugliest glasses I have seen in a while (Woody Allen hommage anyone?) and who is just as irritating ("They just said, Japan, bitch!") They are both dead straight but really are the platonic love of each other's lifes, as evident by the corny scene at the party where they lock eyes and smile and which reminds you of the speech Frances made about what she wants from love at an earlier dinner party.

Frances really hasn't got a clue what she wants in life apart from dancing, she's impulsive (like when she spends credit card money on a spontaneous weekend in Paris or a tax rebate on a fancy dinner) and awkward in social situations.
"Playfighting, this is, like, super fun." I would have punched her for real at that moment.

I don't really know what the purpose of this film was. I just wanted to shout "Grow up!" at her all the time. And the reason it's called "Frances Ha"? I'll keep you in suspense on that one.

We had two walk-outs.

5/10

Wish I had known you were going tonight, chelle 1973, it would have made tonight worth while if we had planned to meet each other. What a bore of a film and the heat was unbearable!! 20 people walked out and I did think about it myself at one point as I was so bored and hot I could feel my eyes drooping. 1/10.

Sorry ladies. I had to leave. It was sooooooooooo dull and so supercilious that coupled with the unbearable heat and the fact that they had missized the film so that it was too big and depending on teh shot the top of people's heads or their feet were cut off. I did not go and tell them for fear they'd start it again and I could not bear the thought of that.
I just wanted it to stop. I don't often wish the leading lady would make an early exit but this was one film.
aargh. I was just unbearable.
