Re: 12 Years A Slave
Thank God! Another film I saw at LFF I can finally talk to you all about!
This is a fantastic film, it is not one you will enjoy, given the subject matter, but it is incredibly well done in every sense, and in my opinion (having seen all the dramas this year already) will easily win Best Picture at the Golden Globes.
It is an incredible and moving story done by an incredible cast (who should also get some recognition for their work) and definitely a must-see. It will make you uncomfortable, and even a bit angry, at times, but in my opinion its totally worth it.

12 Years A Slave
apologies for the many edits in my post as there were problems with links that were originally posted. I got the first one from HDUK. It was abit of a nightmare & I had completely re-register to use it.
Then a friend suggested the second link: http://www.metro.co.uk/filmfirst
but steve9872 suggested the third link: https://www.media-promotions2.com/metrofilmfirst so I am now going with that as he seems to know about these things.
I don't know enough about the different links as the front end all looked the same to me. I am just really sorry if anyone missed out on tix because of that.
I today learnt that not all links are created equal.
Thanks steve for all your corrections!

Re: 12 Years A Slave
There used to be problems with the first link above, so metro released the second link. Those problems appear to have been solved now as although the redirect in the link is still the version that used to give problems, it now works as its supposed to.
The reason the original link posted failed is because it was lifted from the address bar on the booking page - always a no-no with all media-promotions sites. Those redirects from the original link were very necessary to allow you to log in.
To sum up, both the links above just work.

Back from Braehead Odeon where there wasn't an empty seat. Maybe it was because I was sitting beside the world's idiot who can't sit still for two minutes, kept sniffing, cracking his knuckles and invading my personal space but it was so long. The film could had been cut by a good half hour. Good story to tell but too long for me. Condense the story. Lots of recognisable faces. Poor Patsy. 6/10

Re: 12 Years A Slave
Saw this at Braehead also with teddybear1, yinster & OH and nowhere near the knuckle cruncher!
Every seat taken and we even had one lady who sat on the stairs for the duration of the film! Fortunately we never had any staff come in to check out the audience so she was able to see the whole film. I think the screening was so full because of all the advertising for the film and think folk should take this into account if going on Thursday evening.
The story was harrowing throughout. I know it is based on a true story but could have done with a slightly edited part in the 2nd half.
Chiwetel Ejiofor was outstanding in the role of Solomon Northup and is a definite contender for best actor awards.
Lupita Nyong'o who played the part of Patsey was also excellent.
I can certainly understand why it will be nominated for so many awards and has a well deserved 8.6 on IMBd.
I am considering seeing it again on Thursday but not sure if I could watch the suffering of the slaves again so soon.
Marks 8.5/10

Re: 12 Years A Slave
Unfortunately this wasn't as good as I hoped it would be, I guess all of the awards hype surrounding this movie really didn't help but it just wasn't as moving as I'd expected.
Don't get me wrong, it didn't outstay it's welcome time wise but there was just something missing that prevented it from becoming a genuine contender for film of the year.
As things stand, it's still a very decent drama but no more than that so overall 8/10 feels like a fair & appropriate rating...

Re: 12 Years A Slave
Oh dear. I agree with RAZORBACK. Harrowing, yes. Genuinely moving? No. Good performances, yes. Film of the year? No. It was just laid on too thick. "Oscars here we come", screamed every scene, every musical score. Almost everyone in the film was self-absorbed, and that included Solomon. And yes, it was way too long.
Surrey Quays was quite full. But God, that place is disgusting. The staircase inside the cinema screen looked like it could give you e-coli on sight - beyond manky.
Nice to see LondonCityNights and rawsalsa, who was, by her standards, incredibly early.
6/10
