Saw the Kite Runner on Thursday morning... not sure I've ever cried so much at a film before! It was a schools screening, and at one point I went out and when I came back I could hear all the kids crying. Hopefully it opened some of their eyes to how life can be for children in other countries, and to the kinds of reasons that people need refugee status. I found it thought-provoking myself, although I'm not sure it should've been a 12a as some scenes might have given the younger children nightmares. It was a fantastic film, 9/10.
On Thursday night we rented 'Push' on DVD, which has to be one of the most confusing and pointless films of this year. I quite enjoyed the beginning, and it does look visually very good, but the plot was unnecessarily complex and confusing, the relationships between the characters were unbelievable, there were innumerable plotholes and overall it gave the impression of a film that set out to be a 'cool film' without caring whether it really had any substance or structure. 5/10
On Friday night I saw Seven Pounds, and persevered with it despite getting severely bored halfway through. It was quite an emotional film, and the performances by the lead actors were excellent, but the execution of the plot was fumbled and mismatch, meaning there was nothing other than the very beginning 'I need to report a suicide' that was very hard hitting or had much of an impact, a lot of the plot again seemed confused and you have no idea what's going on for ages, once you do work it out it's not so much a revelation as merely 'oh right, that's what he's doing.' It was a good idea with strong acting performances but it was the kind of film that feels like hard work to watch. 6/10
