Woman in Black: Angel of Death

#1 Post by McG » Tue Dec 16, 2014 1:26 pm

Apologies if there already is a thread but I could not see one. If one already exists, please merge, mod.

Saw this last night as a last minute offer by SFF . . . quite unusual in Glasgow to have tickets offered only on the actual day of screening. I tossed up between Dumb & Dumber To and this film and sought advise given I didn't particularly like either first film.
In the end, went to WiB and do think it was probably the better of the 2 films on offer.
No Daniel Radcliffe this time, thank goodness! Although not really horror as such, there are certainly a few 'jumps' to be had in the film helped along by very dramatic music. It's a fairly tense film at times though not particularly satisfying story.
I would never have pa*d to see this but a freebie or voucher makes it ok.
Marks 6/10
Preferred cinemas: Best: Glasgow Quay, Glasgow Braehead, Glasgow Renfield Street, Glasgow Fort & Paisley
Others I'd go to: Glasgow Showcase Baillieston

Films already booked for:

Hope to get tickets for: Every film if they come to my preferred cinemas

I would say that this ticks all the boxes as far as horror goes frights, jumps, shocks and suspense. Perhaps what is lacking is gore, but this is a traditional ghost story.
I have to admit that I was left a little confused by a plot development that seemed to be in the form of a letter that happened too quickly for me to take in, coupled with a few secondary back stories that were also a bit rushed. The sets were all rather comic book/cgi for my liking too. Felt this cheapened it a little.
That said. Have to say. Rather enjoyed.

An easy 8/10.

Spooked me. Try walking up to house tonight in pitch black. No house lights. No street lights where I stay. Swear I saw a black figure watching me.

Very generic and seen it all a million times before. If you liked the last film I guess you'll like this.

Thanks to elski we saw this at the BFI. For a Hammer Horror film production I was expecting lots of jumps and scares but it really wasn't that bad. The original WIB was much scarier I thought. 5/10

Shameful cash in on the original that was more laughable that scary.

Saw this again last night as it premiered on Channel 4. Why on earth was it on so late? It didn't start until 12:45am and ran until two thirty am. It really isn't that horrific.

Then standing in my dark kitchen afterwards, alone in the house, do I not hear the looooong sloooooow creak of a door swinging open! First rational thought - I imagined it. No it was real. And loud. Second rational thought - it's just the wind or a drought blowing open a door. Search as I might thought I could not even locate the culprit door! So - I just had to pretend that I had heard nothing. Spook!
