If you were in London, you could eat vegetarian lunch for free outside SOAS, courtesy of the Hare Krishna. :D

I've had a couple of free meals (including side orders and drinks)at Wagamamas - acting as guineapigs for staff training when they opened new restaurants. I was lucky enough to get in on this when it was posted on MSE.

I am sure other restaurant chains also do this - so look out for any due to open in your area.

For months I kept checking a site for mystery diners but they never had any vacancies in my area, so in the end I gave up. Can't now recall its name but it wouldn't be hard to find something of the sort via a search engine.

Just "google" Mystery Shoppers and a whole list of companies will come up. You can see if any suit you. Be warned though "mystery shopping" is not as easy as you think as you have a lot of work to do answering all the questions on the internet that take a lot of time. You also have to have a very good memory as the companies want a lot of information including names of servers, times for each course etc. and you can't write it down in front of them so you have to nip to the toilet (while you assess the facilities) and write as much as you can then.
The credit crunch has taken its toll on mystery shopping too and there are hardly any jobs going at the moment as the pubs, restaurants etc are having a hard time so they are not spending money on a mystery shopper. I know as I have done this for several years and used to go out at least twice a month plus stay the night at a hotel but I am lucky if I get once a month now and no hotel stays for almost a year. MSE has a mystery shopping thread and you can read about it on there.
