Spooks: The Greater Good

Very disappointed to discover in the opening credits that this is just a feature-length version of the TV show. Obviously I'd noticed the similarity in the name, but I was expecting this just to be a co-incidence.
That said, it is a competent wee thriller, and since it worked for me, never having clapped eyes on the TV show, it must be relatively self-contained and doesn't rely on any prior knowledge.

Kit-Kat Harington (John Snow - GoT - why would they call him the same name as a newsreader? They might just as well have called him Angela Rippon!) looked and acted pretty much as he always does.
There were three ever-so-bland female parts that had so little character development that they were almost impossible to differentiate from one-another.

Other than that, this worked well for a soggy, dark, grey Sunday morning, just as it most likely will on a dark Saturday night in November on TV. Nothing outstanding.

I used to love the TV show and enjoyed this, worked well as a stand alone, apart from not knowing who Ruth was (was briefly explained). Nice little cameo from an old friend of Harry.
watched it at cineworld in Southampton and they showed trailers for 15 mins before film, from 10.15. Never seen that before and a good idea, especially for people like me who can't help being there half an hour before.

I don't think it worked as a stand-alone, first scene was fine, second needed knowledge, third kind of explained it and then things got jumpy.

Obviously you can kind of work out what's going on but without prior knowledge I don't think you can enjoy any of the character interactions because their motivations aren't explained anew.

I've never seen an episode of Spooks, ever, but I still enjoyed this and followed it quite easily. As I understand it, Sir Harry was the only charchater also in the TV series and his role was pretty straightforward to me. This was an old fashioned spy thriller, with no fancy stunts or TS h, just a decent story and I enjoyed it for that. Good entertaining film. 7/10 from me.
