The biggest disappointment this year...

#1 Post by andrews » Thu Nov 26, 2009 8:28 pm

OK, so we've seen a lot of films this year. Some of them have been great, some so-so, and some - well, the less said, the better. But there have been a lot out there which we had high expectations of, and they somehow fell short of the mark. So, just to spark off some conversation while we are waiting for our next free film:

Which of the following do you think has been the most disappointing film of 2009 so far?

Here are a few for your consideration - not an exclusive list by any means.....please have your say. No wrong or right answers here - we're all different, and appreciate different sorts of films. :D

Dead Man Running
Funny People
G.I. Joe
Imagine That
Land of the Lost
Love Happens
Surrogates
The Taking of Pelham 123
Terminator Salvation
Transformers 2
The Ugly Truth
Year One

I haven't seen many of these films to be honest, but 'Imagine That' was fairly disappointing. I was also disappointed with Funny People, and as I had not read any reviews I was expecting a comedy. What I got was a poignant comedy/drama, which was good in places. I think, upon reflection, that it was a better film than I had expected on the whole.

I was heavily disappointed with Funny People too, I enjoyed the first two Apatow films, Knocked Up's use of drama as well as comedy was brilliant, near Kevin Smith quality, but Funny People self-indulgent with a main character we can never take interest in, let alone care about.

Big disappointments seem to be the theme of this year, however.
The Hangover was a massive one, I was hoping for so much more, something like Old School in Vegas, but instead it was about as funny as an episode of Two And A Half Men...
The Invention Of Lying should have been a wonderfully witty silly comedy but instead decided to be slow, far too broad and a big pile of site with a capital H.
On top of them Monsters Vs Aliens I found was a shambles, having accepted Dreamworks as being capable to make good films via Kung Fu Panda I had high hopes for this, but alas it was a stream of random gags with the lowest of brows, and a plot and characters that are never developed, nothing like quality movie making.
One of those big crushes was the recent A Serious Man. Maybe I need to try it again, as I found Public Enemies worked better on a re-watch, as did Bruno, but as a Coen fanatic, failing to enjoy a film is crushingly painful.

On the brighter side some films I thought would be relatively naff turned out to be great, like 9 and Taking of Pelham's remake.

Off that list i have only seen 3 and the only one that really disapointed me was Year One, it had the potential to be funny but for some reason it just wasn't. The only other film this year that has really dissapointed me would have to be Fame, i was so excited to see this, was expecting it to be amazing but it was such a let down, the story was awful probablly the worst film i have seen this year.

The biggest disappointment of the year by far was The Watchmen. Won tickets through the Evening Standard so the fact that I didn't p*y cushioned the blow, but I just found the movie slow, long & pointless!

Behind that, Public Enemies was very poor

Wow, envious on the freebie for Watchmen, though the reaction is unsurprising, it's a niche film.

I like niche films, but I really did find the Watchmen a little bizarre. I watched it on dvd and had to keep rewinding it and still I don't think I "get" the film

Spurred on by AYBG's enthusiasm for the book (a bit of an understatement), I went out and b*ght it, read it a couple of times - I was right out of my comfort zone - what me? reading comics? I found it very interesting, and when I went to see the film, I thought they had done a fairly good job overall. Read the book, everyone. :D

For me it was Public Enemies - that movie just killed it... and possibly Inglorious Basterds too. It wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. Maybe Angels and Demons too. I was very unimpressed with this.
