Saw the trailer for this the other day at WIQ... Looked quite cute. Not sure if it's quite my thing but may give it a try...

Re: Ponyo
a_person, if you liked any of Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Howls Moving Castle, Kikis Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Nausicca Valley of the Wind, My neighbour Totoro, and others, then expect the same from Ponyo.
I'm an absolutely big fan of Miyazaki, director of these animated films. His animation is stunningly rich, surreal and hypnotic. His imagination is incredible. Spirited Away is perhaps my favourite but I love pretty much everything else he has made. The tone of his movies are quite tranquil but captivating at the same time and nearly all have an undercurrent ecological theme.

Re: Ponyo
I saw the trailer for this film yesterday whilst watching Planet 51 and whilst I liked the film and the themes, I did think the animation was a slight step back from his previous works.

Re: Ponyo
I disagree. I got the DVD on import several months ago after it's UK release was put back and I think the animation is every bit as rich as his previous works. Some of the underwater stuff is breathtaking and would look even better on a bigger screen than the one I saw it on.superhero wrote:I saw the trailer for this film yesterday whilst watching Planet 51 and whilst I liked the film and the themes, I did think the animation was a slight step back from his previous works.

Re: Ponyo
Well I am just viewing it from having watched the trailer! Maybe they haven't put the best bits into the trailer, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Re: Ponyo
I think I get what you are driving at. I must admit, the film does not look impressive from the trailer. I think one word sums up why. Disney. Disney trailers always make even their own films appear to be fast paced, action packed, hilarious and ultra cute. Miyazaki films are none of that, well ok they can sometimes be cute. Animation wise though, it looks pretty typical Miyazaki. Perhaps we see too many pixar films and find it jarring not to see those strands of hair billowing and blades of grass waving. But Miyazaki animation was never about that sort of detail, its the imaginative settings and organic flow.superhero wrote:Well I am just viewing it from having watched the trailer!
