Re: Golden Globes 2010
Can we have a poll or a competition for this?
Sadly, I have not seen that many of these (yet!)
I am a bit horrified that Hurt Locker is nominated, but given local military bases, I know this caused offence as it portrayed the British soldiers (SAS?) as incompetent... many British (mainly Scottish) soldiers have died in 'friendly fire' in Iraq and Afghanistan over recent years.
I see these guys in the army fatigues in the supermarket - and they a) knock the spots off most Hollywood stars, b) are normally so short of cash (shopping with partners, and discussing what they can afford - it is NOT contrived), and c) seem totally decent people....
But... what about a poll or something for these?

Re: Golden Globes 2010
On the subject of The Hurt Locker, it was one of the best films of the year all round (directing, acting, editing, narrative and structure) all of which means that it completely deserves its place on the nominations...
As for whether it did a disservice to British Soldiers, if I remember correctly the only British characters shown are Mercenaries rather than proper soldiers and they are part of a team of mixed nationalities - so I don't think there is any slight intended against the armed forces!

Re: Golden Globes 2010
Good to see the nominations: I've seen a few of them already, had already pencilled in a few others in my 'to see' list and now have a few more to look out for!
I once went hiking with M. C. Escher. It was uphill all the way there and uphill all the way back.

Re: Golden Globes 2010
What date are the awards given? It's usually just before the Oscars, isn't it? Quite often, the winners of Golden Globes are in with a stronger chance in the Oscars, though I know this is not always the case.
Re: Golden Globes 2010
I think they are usually held in late January so that they pre-empt the Oscars and also leave enough time for the more successful films to get enough traction with the Academy panel.
The Academy panel member typically wouldn't have watched all of the potential main competitors, so the Golden Globes and a few other key awards help to focus their attention on those films that perhaps they should see if they haven't already. They then have to choose what films they do watch amongst the cinema screenings that are arranged in N.Y and L.A and the huge selection of DVD screeners that are sent out to them each year.
So I guess one advantage that the Golden Globes has is that - being composed mainly of critics as they are - their panel should have already seen and evaluated all of the potential main competitors. They still come up with some funny decisions (just look at a few of this year's noms...) but I find it a lot more credible than the Oscar way of doing things...

Re: Golden Globes 2010
James Cameron is celebrating in Hollywood after picking up both best director and best film for his 3D adventure Avatar at the Golden Globe Awards. (Source ITN)
While it was a successful night for the Canadian, the Brits did not do quite as well.
Dame Helen Mirren, Colin Firth and Daniel Day-Lewis all missed out on major prizes.
Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges won best actress and actor respectively, while Robert Downey Jr and Meryl Streep won the comedy awards.
Ricky Gervais hosted the ceremony and he certainly did not hold back on the gags, taking swipes at Angelina Jolie, Sir Paul McCartney, Mel Gibson and Jennifer Aniston.

Re: Golden Globes 2010
Shocking abuse of authority by the HFPA to show their support to a little indie film that no one has heard of. Really, what is this Avidar, is it really as good as those much better known flicks Inglourious Basterds, Up In The Air, Precious and Hurt Locker?
Guess it's nice that they are helping the little flick find it's legs though...

Re: Golden Globes 2010
I have to say ther Globes have been pretty random this year in quite a few of their categories!
Perhaps the one argument you could make is that they have backed for Best Picture and Director Avatar based upon its technical achievements and
Whilst the really odd choices to me would be the awards to Robert Downey Jr and Sandra Bullock. I think there were definitely better comedic performances this year than Sherlock Holmes and I doubt that Sandra Bullock will take away the Best Actress Oscar (although she'll likely get nominated due to The Blind Side being the big sleeper hit of the year)
The best indicators for the Oscars are probably these awards -
Best Picture - Avatar
Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart
Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) - Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia
Best Supporting Actress - Mo'nique for Precious
Best Supporting Actor - Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds
Best Screenplay - Jason Reitman for Up In The Air
